24 alternatives to A machine learning Rails app to predict your favorite color
I'm nearing completion of the machine learning class offered online by Stanford (Prof. Andrew Ng is awesome). I wanted to try out some of the concepts I learned so I made up this little Rails app. I doubt if you can actually predict someone's favorite color based on a few preference, but we'll see how it looks after a few (thousand?) examples. I'm still working on it, but it's in a working state and I'm collecting all the data I want, so I can always rehash it later to tweak the algo. Hello HN! I found that picking out plausible but diverse skin tones for my digital art and game development projects was kind of difficult, and I got curious about if there was a way to define a color space that made it easy. I crawled lots of websites and extracted their color palettes (primary, secondary, etc) to build a searchable collection of website colors! It was a fun side-project and I learned a lot about color theory. This is a personal project I've been working on for a long time now. I stumbled upon the color quantization problem while doing something related for work. I then found an interesting paper for which I could find no implementations online, and the thing went from "let's implement this paper" to getting pretty obsessed with the whole thing. It's at an early, eaaaarly stage. There's a lot of work to be done, and it's a memory hog, but generally speaking works quite well, and the output is for the most part very high quality, so I'm happy to share it as beta.

I built this API to return the closest named color for any hex value—using curated lists like my own [1], XKCD [2], and others.
