24 alternatives to AutoThink – Boosts local LLM performance with adaptive reasoning

I built AutoThink, a technique that makes local LLMs reason more efficiently by adaptively allocating computational resources based on query complexity. The core idea: instead of giving every query the same "thinking time," classify queries as HIGH or LOW complexity and allocate thinking tokens accordingly. Complex reasoning gets 70-90% of tokens, simple queries get 20-40%. I also implemented steering vectors derived from Pivotal Token Search (originally from Microsoft's Phi-4 paper) that guide the model's reasoning patterns during generation. These vectors encourage behaviors like numerical…

Here's a project I've been working on for the last few months. It's a new (I think) algorithm, that allows to adjust smoothly - and in real time - how many calculations you'd like to do during inference of an LLM model. It seems that it's possible to do just 20-25% of weight multiplications instead of all of them, and still get good inference results. I implemented it to run on M1/M2/M3 GPU. The mmul approximation itself can be pushed to run 2x fast before the quality of output collapses. The inference speed is just a bit faster than Llama.cpp's, because the rest of implementation…

I spent a lot of time and money on this rather big side project of mine that attempts to replicate the mechanistic interpretability research on proprietary LLMs that was quite popular this year and produced great research papers by Anthropic [1], OpenAI [2] and Deepmind [3]. I am quite proud of this project and since I consider myself the target audience for HackerNews did I think that maybe some of you would appreciate this open research replication as well. Happy to answer any questions or face any feedback. Cheers [1]…

I built this tool because I wanted a way to just take a bunch of URLs or domains, and query their content in RAG applications. It takes away the pain of crawling, extracting content, chunking, vectorizing, and updating periodically. I'm curious to see if it can be useful to others. I meant to launch this six months ago but life got in the way...

I replicated David Ng's RYS method (https://dnhkng.github.io/posts/rys/) on consumer AMD GPUs (RX 7900 XT + RX 6950 XT) and found something I didn't expect. Transformers appear to have discrete "reasoning circuits" — contiguous blocks of 3-4 layers that act as indivisible cognitive units. Duplicate the right block and the model runs its reasoning pipeline twice. No weights change. No training. The model just thinks longer. The results on standard benchmarks (lm-evaluation-harness, n=50): Devstral-24B, layers 12-14 duplicated once: - BBH Logical Deduction: 0.22 → 0.76…

Recently I've been working on making LLM evaluations fast by using bayesian optimization to select a sensible subset. Bayesian optimization is used because it’s good for exploration / exploitation of expensive black box (paraphrase, LLM). I would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions on this!

I have been working in AI space for a while now, first at FAANG with ML since 2021, then with LLM in start-ups since early 2023. I think LLM Application development is extremely iterative, more so than any other types of development. This is because to improve an LLM application performance (accuracy, hallucinations, latency, cost), you need to try various combinations of LLM models, prompt templates (e.g., few-shot, chain-of-thought), prompt context with different RAG architecture, different agent architecture, and more. There are thousands of possible combinations and you need a process…

We can now build drastically higher quality search because we can use LLMs in algorithms that mimic a human's systematic research process, instead of just roughly recommending results based on semantic embeddings or term frequency. We built a deep search LLM pipeline that takes a few minutes to carefully search all the scientific literature. You describe your complex goal, as you would to a colleague. Then, we carefully search 200M+ papers. We classify the preliminary results with GPT-4. We then adapt the search goals based on relevant/irrelevant papers uncovered and continue searching,…

Hey HN, I've been building AutoAgents, an AI agent framework in Rust. Today I'm sharing a feature I haven't seen done well elsewhere: composable middleware layers for LLM inference pipelines. The problem Every agent framework lets you swap LLM providers. Almost none of them give you a structured way to enforce safety, caching, or data sanitization in the inference path itself. You end up with guardrails as application-level if-statements, caching bolted on as a separate service, and PII handling as a "we'll add it later" TODO that never ships. This gets worse with local models. Cloud APIs…

TLDR: A small, vendor-agnostic inference loop that turns token logprobs/perplexity/entropy into an extra pass and reasoning for LLMs. - Captures logprobs/top-k during generation, computes perplexity and token-level entropy. - Triggers at most one refine when simple thresholds fire; passes a compact “uncertainty report” (uncertain tokens + top-k alts + local context) back to the model. - In our tests on technical Q&A / math / code, a small model recovered much of “reasoning” quality at ~⅓ the cost while refining ~⅓ of outputs. I kept seeing “reasoning” models behave…

Hey folks, I’m the creator of WFGY — a semantic reasoning framework for LLMs. After open-sourcing it, I did a full technical and value audit — and realized this engine might be worth $8M–$17M based on AI module licensing norms. If embedded as part of a platform core, the valuation could exceed $30M. Too late to pull it back. So here it is — fully free, open-sourced under MIT. --- ### What does it solve? Current LLMs (even GPT-4+) lack *self-consistent reasoning*. They struggle with: - Fragmented logic across turns - No internal loopback or self-calibration - No modular thought units - Weak…

I’ve always been curious about big, complex topics; things like quantum computing, AI ethics, or philosophy, but I’d often get stuck at the very beginning. I’d open a dozen tabs, skim Wikipedia, and still not feel like I had a good mental model of what I was even looking at. So I built a tool to help with that. You type in any topic, and it generates a simple mind map; just a few high-level subtopics to start. Then, as you click and explore those nodes, it expands outward with more specific, connected concepts. The map grows with your curiosity. It’s intentionally lightweight and…

The most common failures for production agents are behavioral: looping, reasoning leakage, user frustration, and more. Using a frontier model like GPT or Sonnet to judge every turn is too expensive and slow to run at scale. To solve this, we built Reflexes: semantic signals from agent traces, served fast and cheap over API. Built on custom kernels and a custom inference engine forked from vLLM. Under the hood, it is a small LLM architected around multi-head inference. Small models need to be trained for specific tasks, but running 50 separate small models on the same input for 50 tasks makes…

Hey HN, We’re the team behind HelpingAI, and we’ve been experimenting with ways to make LLM reasoning faster and more efficient, especially for complex tasks like math problems, coding questions, and logic puzzles. During a fine-tuning session of our older reasoning model, a bug accidentally introduced a think tag mid-response. Rather than break the model, it created a chain-of-thought style intermediate step — and the model got better. That bug inspired us to explore what we now call Intermediate Reasoning. We scaled this up by fine-tuning Qwen3-14B on 3 trillion tokens of…

Hi HN, we are the founders of Relari (https://www.relari.ai). We launched our LLM evaluation stack on HN a few months ago (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39641105), which is now used in production by AI teams at companies like Vanta and PwC. We have since expanded to directly optimizing parts of an LLM pipeline using a data-driven approach. In particular, we see a lot of potential in the Auto Prompt Optimization—which could be an attractive alternative to fine-tuning in many cases—to use data to align LLMs for domain-specific tasks.
