Outlines is a Python library that focuses on text generation with large language models. Brandon and I are not LLM experts and started the project a few months ago because we wanted to understand better how the generation process works. Our original background is probabilistic, relational and symbolic programming. Recently we came up with a fast way to generate text that matches a regex (https://blog.normalcomputing.ai/posts/2023-07-27-regex-guide...). The basic idea is simple: regular expressions have an equivalent Deterministic-Finite Automaton (DFA) representation. We…

Hey HN! Erik here from banana.dev We’ve trained a small(ish) language model on structured extraction, and today we’re launching a playground for it at https://anythingtojson.com. Give it a try! This model continues our work on structured generation, following last week’s launch of Fructose[1], a python client for strongly-typed LLM responses. There seem to be two distinct halves of the problem intended to be solved by Fructose and structured generation: 1. the reasoning ability of the model, such as performing chain of thought, creative acts, and natural language tasks. In a way,…

Hi HN, I’m building SEE (Semantic Entropy Encoding): a searchable compression format for JSON/NDJSON. Goal: reduce the “data tax” (storage/egress) and “CPU tax” (decompress/parse) by keeping JSON searchable while compressed, with page-level random access. I just published a proof-first evaluation release: Offline DEMO ZIP (~10 min): prints compression ratios + skip rates + lookup latency (p50/p95/p99) DD pack: audit/repro evidence (decode mismatch=0, extended mismatch=0, audit PASS) Latest release:…

Built this for streaming AI tool calls. LLMs stream function arguments as JSON character-by-character. Most parsers reparse from scratch each time - O(n²) behavior that causes UI lag. This maintains parsing state, processing only new characters. True O(n) performance that stays imperceptible throughout the entire response. Ruby gem, MIT licensed. Would love feedback.

Problem JSON/NDJSON is everywhere in data platforms, but compression usually breaks searchability. You either keep queryable raw stores (high I/O/egress) or compress into gz/zstd blobs (cheap to store, painful to probe). The “cloud tax” shows up as wasted reads. What I built (SEE — Semantic Entropy Encoding) A schema-aware, searchable compression codec for JSON that keeps exists/pos lookups fast while still compressing. Internals: structure-aware delta + dictionaries, a PageDir + mini-index to jump to relevant pages, and a tuned Bloom filter that skips ~99% of pages.…

I've been at it again, just sharing my simple JSON data inspection tool, love webdev and single page apps, this one took 4 days and was a lot of fun. The code is not obfuscated so you can inspect it and see how it works (very simple, server side is even more simple) Pretty much just do a POST of your JSON data from within your code and it will convert it into a basic table for instant search and sort. Made with love for the fun of it, no ads, no paid anything, it's totally free. Please only send in sanitized/test data only, this is meant to help make webdev a bit easier and more fun.…
