I'm excited to share with HN a new pet project I've been working on to explore how AI can create and explain harmonic chord progressions - Chord Variations. The project uses GPT-4 to generate unique and interesting chord combinations based on user input chord progression. It's akin to having a virtual musical assistant that can help non-musicians and musicians alike explore and create harmonious sound without needing any prior knowledge of music theory. The generated chord suggestions maintain a similar vibe to the user input. Alternative chord progression includes extended chords, chord…

I trained a 125M-parameter transformer to autocomplete piano performances in real time (~108 notes/sec on an iPhone 15). The idea is basically GitHub Copilot or Tabnine, except instead of prompting it with code, you prompt it by playing a few notes on a MIDI piano. The model then continues what you played, entirely on-device. The app is free if anyone wants to try it. Happy to answer questions about the model, training, Core ML, or the many things that didn't work.

Almost a year ago someone stumbled upon our hobby project and posted it to HN (edit: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33999162). It was magical to see so many of you enjoy something we built for our love of music. We’re back today with a real product and are excited to see what you think! riffusion.com lets you create original music via short, shareable audio clips called “riffs”. You describe the lyrics and a musical style to generate riffs complete with singing and custom artwork in a few seconds. From inspiring musicians, to wishing your mom a ‘good morning!’, we are…

Hi HN! I'm Gabe, the creator of Songcraft (https://songcraft.io/home). I recently dove headfirst into songwriting, and I quickly grew frustrated with my process. I found songwriting difficult enough without having to wrangle a mess of different tools, and there's no great solution to build chord sheets and tabs (unless you love pure text input). So, I built Songcraft - an online songwriting platform and tab builder. The drag-and-drop editor makes it easy to jump from chords to lyrics to melodies. I added a chord progression generator and chord recommendation engine to ensure…

Hello HN, I just released this music theory and ear training mobile app for guitar which I've been working on for a bit more than a year on the side. The idea was to make something for the eternally "intermediate" guitarist (myself included). There are a lot of beginner apps which rely on learning songs, toolkits which give you a bunch of stuff with no explanation but not many in-between apps to actually learn and practice more generic and somewhat advanced stuff. The app contains short lessons, recaps and most importantly challenges (visual, audio and pure theory) along with a very complete…

Author here - one of the most notable facts about the app is that it's made entirely in Godot Game Engine! I think it's great for apps like this because it makes it especialy easy to iterate on GUI designs such as this one. Feel free to ask me anything about Chord Chart Memo, or my experience with Godot.

Hi HN, I built Contrapunk because I wanted to play guitar and hear counterpoint harmonies generated in real-time. It takes audio from your guitar, MIDI player or your computer keyboard and generates harmony voices that follow counterpoint rules to generate harmonies. You can choose the key you would like to improvise/play in and the voice leading style and which part of the harmony you would like to play as, as well. macOS DMG: https://github.com/contrapunk-audio/contrapunk/releases/tag/...
