Products that do what Daily octopus facts – a simple low tech project does
I'm excited to share a recent project, tentacles.love, a simple low-tech website that presents a new fact about octopuses every day. My fascination with these intelligent creatures inspired me to create a website where people can learn something new about them every day. The technology and design of the website are straightforward and minimalistic, as I wanted to keep things as simple as possible. Every day at 00:00 UTC, a script updates the website's HTML with a random octopus fact. This script is triggered daily via crontab. Simple :)

Did this during the holidays and just finished with few extra features: http://thingsand.me/ And an example blog: http://thingsand.me/jori I tried to keep the platform as simple as possible and focus on the images instead of making yet another blogging platform. Time will tell for what people are going to use it. I hope to add API soon (iPhone uploader would be awesome to blog daily activities).

I recently re-jiggered my blog to use pinboard as it's CMS. A cron job runs once every 15 minutes and generates a static HTML file of my most recent 15 posts. Yes it is fairly limited in what it can do, but it's a great simple way to make what I already do on pinboard into a link blog.

I was already doing this semi-manually for a handful a websites of my own and then I thought "Hey, other people might want to do this too". Tracking the Google homepage and BBC News can be pretty fun too. Hi, looking for your feedback on my first public project. The Idea: Every lurepet (big picture) that you see on the site has some "genes" and is drawn according to them. After the best lurepets are selected they can be bred to make children looking like their parents. This is going to be repeated to create more and more beautiful lurepets. I’ve been working on a browser-based evolutionary simulation as a personal experiment. Organisms adapt to environmental pressure over time, and there are no explicit goals or scoring, the system is open-ended and runs continuously. I built this mainly to challenge myself and to explore how to surface simulation behavior and statistics in a way that stays readable rather than overwhelming. As a side effect, it’s also something my kids enjoys watching run. Curious what resonates and what doesn’t, and happy to answer questions about the design or tradeoffs.
