This was something I built while trying to look for housing in Toronto that was decently transit-accessible to my office while still cheap. The backend is written in Rust. It parses public GTFS data from transit agencies and performs a simple heuristics-based BFS on the bus lines to calculate how long to reach all points in a city. The frontend uses React and Mapbox GL to render each individual road segment based on how long it takes to reach. This project was a great excuse to learn Rust, deployments, and mapping. The source code is here if you are interested:…

I wrote a tool in Python that finds the school district associated with any given street address in the United States. Here’s how it works: An address corresponds to a single point on the map. The U.S Census Bureau has a geocoder that converts an address to latitude and longitude coordinates. School district boundaries can be represented as polygons on the map. The National Center for Education Statistics (NECS) has geographic data on school district boundaries. Once we determine which polygon the point resides in, we know the school district.

Hi HN! Today I'm launching OpenTimes, a free database of roughly 150 billion pre-computed, point-to-point travel times between United States Census geographies. In addition to letting you visualize travel isochrones on the homepage, OpenTimes also lets you download massive amounts of travel time data for free and with no limits. The primary goal here is to enable research and fill a gap I noticed in the open-source spatial ecosystem. Researchers (social scientists, economists, etc.) use large travel time matrices to quantify things like access to healthcare, but they often end up paying…

I use points and miles for most of my travel. Every booking comes down to the same decision: use points or pay cash? To answer that, you need award availability across multiple programs, cash prices, your current balances, transfer partner ratios, and the math to compare them. I got tired of doing it manually across a dozen tabs. This toolkit teaches Claude Code and OpenCode how to do it. 7 skills (markdown files with API docs and curl examples) and 6 MCP servers (real-time tools the AI calls directly). It searches award flights across 25+ mileage programs (Seats.aero), compares cash prices…

I was developing/selling this application under Roadometry, but sales are getting slow and I'd prefer to make it available for free. This is a desktop Windows application which can be used for counting road traffic. https://roadometry.com https://www.youtube.com/@roadometry2011 The application uses Multiple Hypothesis Tracking (MHT) combined with Darknet Yolo. I trained the network myself. I have a tool-chain for building a video-based training set including associations, but it's quite complex to use. I never ended up training a network to perform association,…

Hey HN, I just launched https://PostalAgent.com, a site that lets you easily send highly targeted postcards to specific neighborhoods. I originally built this site 5 years ago but shut it down when my full time engineering job became too demanding, but recently I did a full rewrite with many new features. To start you can select an area using a City, State, or even by circling specific areas on a Google Map. Then, you can refine your results and filter on specific demographics, like household income, home value, rental status, etc You can also search for Businesses rather than…

I find myself often texting people, "where are you?" so I wrote this little iPhone app that lets me text them a special link. When they click the link, it uses the HTML5 geolocation API to report their location and shows it on a map. http://whru.at/ It's only as accurate as the HTML5 geolocation API, but I've been finding it pretty useful. What do you think?
