We had a lot of reasons we wanted to build our own help desk, the least of which (and easiest to mention) is that a three seat license to the top tier desk systems are well over $100/mo. Plus they were slowing us down quite a bit. A couple of years ago I wrote Hello Web App (http://hellowebapp.com) to teach beginner Django web app development. I wrote this over the last couple of weeks using Rails 3, Twilio and a variety of Gems, putting in about 2 hours per day. I'd love any feedback from the HN community on any aspects of the site (design, API construction, documentation, marketing, pricing which is TBD). On a related note: I have to say that I'm really flying with Rails 3. Typically I roll with Django, but have been super impressed with the Rails 3. This framework is meant to be a tool for construction, so if you want to play around with it for creating potential specific implementations, you can drop the contents of the website, the GitHub README, and the entire overview.md into an AI chat, and that should be enough to use the framework, at least conceptually.
