A few months ago, the Exploratorium in San Francisco had its network compromised due to a phishing attack. An employee hurriedly filled out her credentials in what looked like a Google Docs sign-in but was actually a hacker's fake site. The hacker then used her credentials to steal 54 other employee passwords. Current solutions to phishing are limited to forcing employees to attend training to spot these hacks and attempting to judge the URL's reputation. People don't have time to pay attention to every url they click. This is especially true when faced with deadlines. Even the technical…

hey all, happy to share research i've been working on for islo.dev in recent months. ever since the cheating agents (https://debugml.github.io/cheating-agents/) paper came out, revealing reward hacking was 4x more prevalent than previously estimated, i've been looking into how we can deal with the issue the common approach (taken by the tbench team) is post hoc trajectory analysis. i've been interested in the idea of reframing the problem as an endpoint security problem and tackling it via sandbox i hope you find it interesting, and thanks to the islo.dev team for…

Hello Hacker News community! I'm currently working in financial risk management within the banking sector, and I began my career as a Data Science specialist. For quite some time, my friend and I have been developing a small pet project just for fun. This tool has repeatedly helped us save time when testing various hypotheses and machine learning models. The core idea is to combine different scripts—created in various programming languages and virtual environments—within a minimalist graphical interface. Whether you're building models, running a local neural network, or sending requests to…

Hey HN, I’ve been working on Phended, a cybersecurity education site focused on making defensive knowledge approachable—especially for small businesses and non-technical users who don’t have time to dig through jargon-filled resources. Right now, it’s a mix of free tools, guides, and checklists, with a chatbot assistant named Dave who helps answer questions. I’m gearing up for a full refresh as I build out more content and structure things better, so it’s still early days—but I’d love to get feedback before I go too deep into the overhaul. Some stuff I’m planning - More actionable guides and…

Hi HN, I’m the founder of https://b2v.xyz, a service that protects organizations against impersonation attacks. The problem I’m trying to solve stems from the following observation: while end-user authentication methods are becoming more advanced as cybersecurity evolves, organizations aren't experiencing the same improvements when we reverse the roles, i.e. when organizations authenticate themselves to their users. This imbalance leaves a gap in secure communications that B2V aims to close. Bad actors have countless ways to pose as trusted entities — through phishing, smishing,…

There is too much of everything in cybersecurity. Noise, FUD, unfulfilled sales promises, incidents, things to address, information to process, technologies to look at, people to educate. I am working as a CISO and it's mostly my job to raise awareness, understand all the risks, track all current issues and prioritize them, and be able to communicate all that with proper references and examples to our management team. I've been building and dogfooding a tool that ingests much of the noise and provides focused notifications per cybersecurity topic and regular awareness texts. The idea was to…

We think this is helpful because scams are getting more out of hand than ever, so we wanted to build a tool that can help people to identify scams instantly and ALSO creates a large dataset to "train" everyone's brain on scam detection patterns. After browsing 10-20 scams, anyone can quickly learn what indicators to look for in subtle (or not so subtle) scams. 1. Upload screenshot of anything you think is suspicious 2. GPT-vision goes to work, extract text and analyze the screentho and give you an instant result 3. Each upload adds to a growing public database, letting everyone to see and…

Hello HN, around October last year, I started to work on campaignkit.cc as a side project. It is a service to detect invalid and malicious email addresses. You can upload text files, and use the REST API or direct integration to retrieve a detailed report for each email address. End of March I added Stripe Payments and got my first paying customers via SEM. A coworker suggested starting a Show HN thread, so here we are :) I used golang for the backend since I wanted something lightweight with fast compilation times (coming from scala). For the frontend, I'm using Next.js and TailwindUI. On…
