One year ago I started to explore combining CRDTs with end-to-end encryption to allow people to collaborate on the same documents/data. Couple months back I got a first prototype working. Think of a simple Google Docs, but end-to-end encrypted and offline-first (iOS & Android for now). Why CRDTs? Every document is a CRDT data structure. This is very important for conflict resolution. Hi HN! Matrix-CRDT connects the worlds of Yjs [1] (a proven, high performance CRDT) with that of Matrix.org [2]. It started as an experiment, asking myself; can we store "state updates of a datastore" in Matrix instead of chat messages? Now, I'm convinced it's actually a really powerful combination to develop real-time, collaborative software. I'm using it for a new project and so far didn't have to write a backend yet. This is a demo of a family of libraries intended to make it easy to build local-first, real-time applications for mobile, desktop and the web using CRDTs.
