Hello HN, Over the last year we've been building ente[1], a privacy-friendly, easy-to-use alternative to Google Photos. We've so far built Android[2][3], iOS[4], web[5] apps that encrypt your files and back them up in the background. You can access these across your devices, and share them with other ente users, end-to-end encrypted. You can also use our electron app[6] to maintain a local copy of your backed up files. We've built a fault-tolerant data replication layer that replicates your data to two different storage providers in the EU. We will be providing additional replicas as an…

Hey HN, I built this to scratch an itch I had around what can be done solely using the URL. It's very minimal with no storage involved, and your files can even be encrypted. The only caveat is some platforms wont allow you to post long links. I thought about using a URL shortener, but storing and mapping URLs kind of defeats the purpose. However most browsers do allow you to open them once you have them. For instance I was able to "share" a 10MB file using safari, however 350KB seems to be the max for Chrome.

I wanted to replace: - AirDroid - sending files to my own PC or laptop. - ShareIt - sending big files over the local network to my family devices. - Dropbox - sharing select files with other people over the Internet. Requirements I had in mind: - end-to-end encryption, no sign ups, no accounts, no passwords - local connection if devices are on the same network - asynchronous access, server should work seamlessly in the background This week I finally managed to stitch the pieces together…
