Hi HN! Today I’m excited to launch OpenNutrition: a free, ODbL-licenced nutrition database of everyday generic, branded, and restaurant foods, a search engine that can browse the web to import new foods, and a companion app that bundles the database and search as a free macro tracking app. Consistently logging the foods you eat has been shown to support long-term health outcomes (1)(2), but doing so easily depends on having a large, accurate, and up-to-date nutrition database. Free, public databases are often out-of-date, hard to navigate, and missing critical coverage (like branded…

Nutri is still in beta and the GPT-powered results are sometimes inaccurate. The nutrient information accuracy is good to get an overview, but there are still outliers at times. I'm looking to improve the accuracy through food databases. Furthermore, I'd like to add additional tips for combining / preparing food to improve its nutritional value. For example, iron absorption is improved through vitamin C, so combine chickpeas or leafy greens with lemon. Or combine beans with rice to get all amino acids. https://github.com/galvez/contagrama Right now I've got a tagger UI and an API that correctly identifies foods you've tagged (from the USDA Food Nutrition Database) and processes gram-amounts from plain text to produce a combined nutritional chart. This is very early stage so more of a call for help: the nutrient chart needs a better design and the API needs work in properly processing g/mg/ml and all the weight conversions defined in the usda_weights table. If you're into nutrition, liked the project and would like to help, drop me a note.

I made a table where you can find out the source/location of factory for where health supplements are made. Then, I spent a year reading product labels so you can save time and money when buying supplements. This is that update. This is still a work in progress but it functions fine. My previous post was a simple database of company data showing ingredient sourcing/location. That took 10 days, this has taken me close to 9 months. BackOfLabel is an extension of that initial interest with dosage information at the product & ingredient level. This update allows sorting by many more…
