24 alternatives to Frockly – A visual editor for understanding complex Excel formulas

I built a visual editor that represents Excel formulas as blocks, making it easier to inspect, refactor, and reason about complex formulas structurally. Frockly is not an Excel replacement. It focuses on understanding and refactoring formulas before bringing them back to Excel. Demo: https://ryuu12358.github.io/Frockly/ GitHub: https://github.com/ryuu12358/Frockly Write-up: https://note.com/ryuu12358/n/naa65d9d5facd (Japanese)

Frockly is a visual editor that displays Excel formulas as blocks, helping users inspect, refactor, and understand complex formulas structurally. Designed for spreadsheet professionals who work with intricate formulas… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

While speccing out this spreadsheet tool, I realized that I never had to think about the keybindings. It all just came naturally from Vim. Normal/insert/visual modes, hjkl navigation, dd/yy/p, :w, :q. The usual muscle memory works. It supports CSV/TSV import and export, and a native .cell format that preserves formulas. The formula engine handles SUM, AVERAGE, COUNT, MIN, MAX, and IF with range references. The codebase is a Cargo workspace: a pure cell-sheet-core library (no TUI dependency) and a cell-sheet-tui crate on top of ratatui. Early days, but it's usable. To…

In a popular post today[1] the title claims "VM in Google Sheets", but it's actually in Google Script, which is basically Javascript and not an interesting technical accomplishment (definitely a useful educational tool, though). Disappointed, I set out to fix it. Voila! https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g3-FZBnkDuLqFYOmk457... A Brainfk interpreter in pure Google Sheets formulas. The hard part was parentheses matching, so I think other VMs would be even easier. [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14701460

Probly was built to reduce context-switching between spreadsheet applications, Python notebooks, and AI tools. It’s a simple spreadsheet that lets you talk to your data. Need pandas analysis? Just ask in plain English, and the code runs right in your browser. Want a chart? Just ask. While there are tools available in this space like TheBricks, Probly is a minimalist, open-source solution built with React, TypeScript, Next.js, Handsontable, Hyperformula, Apache Echarts, OpenAI, and Pyodide. It's still a work in progress, but it's already useful for my daily tasks.

The project is called QueryStorm. It uses Roslyn to offer C# (and VB.NET) support in Excel, as an alternative to VBA. I've posted about it before, but a lot has changed since then so figured I'd share an update. The current version includes a host of new features, namely a C# debugger, support for NuGet packages, and the ability to publish Excel extensions to an "AppStore" (which is essentially a NuGet repository). The AppStore can be used by anyone with the (free) runtime component. Another great addition is the community license, which is a free license for individuals and small companies…

I'm Robbert, the creator of DataGridXL.js. Last month I released version 2 which includes many new features. DataGridXL is a free (and commercial) editable data table library written in ES6. My goal is to develop the most performant & user-friendly spreadsheet-like data table out there: - It has zero dependencies. You don’t need any framework to use DataGridXL. - It is lightweight (~250kb) and easy to use. It does not even require messing with CSS. - It has its own Virtual DOM implementation to prevent DOM errors. - Developer friendly. Supports all modern web browsers Please take a look at…

Hi folks. I've been doing some experiments on how LLMs could get more handy in the day to day of working with files (CSV, Parquet, etc). Earlier last year, I built https://datakit.page and evolved it over and over into an all in-browser experience with help of duckdb-wasm. Got loads of feedbacks and I think it turned into a good shape with being an adhoc local data studio, but I kept hearing two main things/issues: Why can't the AI also change cells in the file we give to it? Why can't we modify this grid ourselves? So besides the whole READ and text-to-SQL flows, what seemed…

Backstory: I wanted to play with intraday stock data but couldn't find a free dataset anywhere. IEXCloud [1] offers API access to 1-minute granularity intraday historical price data, but I was worried that it could get expensive or unwieldy to build up a substantial dataset via API calls. Plus, IEX gives out their raw data for free. I probably should have just used the IEXTools python library [2] to parse IEX's raw data dumps, but I was working on a Julia project, so it felt more thematically appropriate to build a new tool from scratch. I haven't been actively using InvestorsExchange.jl a…

Hi HN, I built Pane, a spreadsheet-native agent that operates directly on the grid (cells, formulas, references, ranges) instead of treating spreadsheets as text. Most spreadsheet AI tools fail because they: - hallucinate formulas - lose context across edits - can't reliably modify existing models Pane runs inside the spreadsheet environment and uses the same primitives a human would: selecting cells, editing formulas, inserting ranges, reconciling tables. I launched it on Product Hunt this weekend and it unexpectedly resonated, which made me curious whether this approach actually holds up…

Hey HN! We’re excited to show you Subset (https://subset.so)! Subset is a spreadsheet on an infinite canvas where you can drop in spreadsheet building blocks and connect them together to easily build good looking analytical tools. My cofounder and I both worked in finance before this. We quit our jobs and learned to code to build the spreadsheet we always wanted. We got frustrated with how much time was wasted recreating the same thing from scratch or trying to extract something reusable from a previous spreadsheet. We wanted a spreadsheet with more composability and a community of…
