hi guys. been working on something i think is fundamentally missing in today's workflow with ai agents. vcs. i find myself struggling with questions that agents can't answer like "why did you do it?", "when did u delete this folder? why?", etc. or trying to /rewind (after a /compact...) or basically `bisect` to find when and why something was done by the agent in the current / previous session. just like git did for code, i think we are the same core capabilities with ai agents so... i developed an open source solution for that (currently supporting claude code) would love to…

I've found it helps PR reviewers when they can look through a set of commits with clear messages and logically organized changes. Typically reviewers prefer a larger quantity of smaller changes versus a smaller quantity of larger changes. Sometimes it gets really messy to break up a change into sufficiently small PRs, so thoughtful commits are a great way of further subdividing changes in PRs. It can be pretty time consuming to do this though, so this tool automates the process with the help of AI. The tool sends the diff of your git branch against a base branch to an LLM provider. The LLM…

I've always wanted a better way to explore the authorship data embedded in a Git commit log. I'm having fun building a CLI tool to do this. It's a bit like the "Contributors" tab on Github that shows you how many commits each contributor has made but much faster and with many more options. If you get a chance to try it out, please let me know. I'd love to hear feedback and suggestions. Thank you!

Hey HN! I built a proof-of-concept for AI memory using Git instead of vector databases. The insight: Git already solved versioned document management. Why are we building complex vector stores when we could just use markdown files with Git's built-in diff/blame/history? How it works: Memories stored as markdown files in a Git repo Each conversation = one commit git diff shows how understanding evolves over time BM25 for search (no embeddings needed) LLMs generate search queries from conversation context Example: Ask "how has my project evolved?" and it uses git diff to show actual…

Git AI is a side project I created to track AI-generated code in our repos from development, through PRs, and into production. It does not just count lines, it keeps track of them as your code evolves, gets refactored and the git history gets rewritten. Think 'git blame' but for AI code. There's a lot about how it works in the post, but wanted to share how it's been impacting me + my team: - I find I review AI code very differently than human code. Being able to see the prompts my colleagues used, what the AI wrote, and where they stepped in to override has been extraordinarily helpful. This…

We built GitAgent because we kept seeing the same problem: every agent framework defines agents differently, and switching frameworks means rewriting everything. GitAgent is a spec that defines an AI agent as files in a git repo. Three core files — agent.yaml (config), SOUL.md (personality/instructions), and SKILL.md (capabilities) — and you get a portable agent definition that exports to Claude Code, OpenAI Agents SDK, CrewAI, Google ADK, LangChain, and others. What you get for free by being git-native: 1. Version control for agent behavior (roll back a bad prompt like you'd revert a…

Too often I find myself being lazy with commit messages. But I don't want AI to write them for me... only i truly know why i wrote the code i did. So why don't i get AI to help me get that into words from my head? That's what i built: smartcommit asks you questions about your changes, then helps you articulate what you already know into a proper commit message. Captures the what, how, and why. Built this after repeatedly being confused 6 months in a project as to why i made the change i had made... Would love feedback!

Hey folks, Here's a quick and dirty tool to use natural language to get git to do what you want. Example: $gitgpt create a new branch called feature/test add all the files and commit with msg creating feature test then push to origin I haven't put it through the wringer yet, however it's worked well with some pretty straight forward day to day git usage.
