Hey, just a work related project I made, which could be open sourced :D If you're looking for an example on how to use/fine-tune yolov8, I feel like taking a look at this repo and reading the README could help you get up to speed (also linked some nice refs)! This is actually a full rewrite of a proprietary project I made (and documented on my site) like a year ago, will do some finishing touches (write blog post about it, mark the old version deprecated, record a tutorial on how to set it up on an Ubuntu server, etc, etc) in the following month, but felt like sharing it now, cuz I…

I used the YOLO object detection library from Ultralytics to scan over 40 million hotel photos and identify images with office chairs. This helped me create a map showing hotels suitable for remote work. Map: https://www.tripoffice.com/maps Yolo: https://www.ultralytics.com/yolo The whole process was done on a home Mac without the use of any LLMs. It's based on traditional object detection technology.

I was developing/selling this application under Roadometry, but sales are getting slow and I'd prefer to make it available for free. This is a desktop Windows application which can be used for counting road traffic. https://roadometry.com https://www.youtube.com/@roadometry2011 The application uses Multiple Hypothesis Tracking (MHT) combined with Darknet Yolo. I trained the network myself. I have a tool-chain for building a video-based training set including associations, but it's quite complex to use. I never ended up training a network to perform association,…

Built this over the last few days, based on a Rust codebase that parses the latest ALPR reports from OpenStreetMaps, calculates navigation statistics from every tagged residential building to nearby amenities, and tests each route for intersection with those ALPR cameras (Flock being the most widespread). These have gotten more controversial in recent months, due to their indiscriminate large scale data collection, with 404 Media publishing many original pieces (https://www.404media.co/tag/flock/) about their adoption and (ab)use across the country. I wanted to use…

New York City has this cool program that lets anyone report idling commercial vehicles and get a large cut of the fines [1]. It's been in the news recently [2]. I've filed a few reports, and I found the process frustrating and error-prone. The forms are fiddly, there's way too much information that needs to be copied down from the video by hand, you have to use a third-party app to take a timestamped video and a different app to compress it before uploading, and approximately none of it can be done on your phone — the device you probably used to record your video in the first place. I built…

Hey HN, I’m Henry, cofounder and CTO at Span (https://span.app/). Today we’re launching AI Code Detector, an AI code detection tool you can try in your browser. The explosion of AI generated code has created some weird problems for engineering orgs. Tools like Cursor and Copilot are used by virtually every org on the planet – but each codegen tool has its own idiosyncratic way of reporting usage. Some don’t report usage at all. Our view is that token spend will start competing with payroll spend as AI becomes more deeply ingrained in how we build software, so understanding how…

Hey HN! Last week, Joe Barrow released CommonForms [1], a set of open models for automatically detecting form fields in PDFs. He trained two models, FFDNet-S and FFDNet-L, on a dataset of 55k documents. You can read more about his approach in the arXiv paper [2]. As someone who's been searching for reliable models to auto-detect form fields (one of the last hard problems in PDF form filling), I was seriously impressed by the quality of these models. I wanted to give them the attention and distribution they deserve, so I created a fully browser-based implementation that handles both detection…

During a recent subway outage in San Francisco I decided to build a webapp in the spirit of "Do I Need an Umbrella," basically to answer the question "Should I take the subway or a bus?" In the interest of learning new tools I decided to vibe code it as much as possible. First, I had Claude Code write a background script to download images of the real-time circuit diagram of the subway, which are publicly available here: http://sfmunicentral.com/ Next I had it build an image labeler tool in tkinter, which turned out to need a lot of manual tweaking before I could even get to…
