Products that do what Hangin' Man – A modern take on classic hangman game does

Hello HN, I recently built a hangman game called Hangin' Man! It's just a weekend project, nothing crazy, but I'd been wanting to create this for ages out of frustration with the lack of decent hangman games out there. I love playing word games - I regularly play Wordle, Skribbl, you name it. But hangman was my favourite game growing up. I'm really disappointed by the hangman options available online. Most of them look like they're from the 2000s and use kindergarten-level words. So this is my attempt at making "the hangman game" for the internet. It has a competitive mode for word geeks and…

This is a game I wrote over the last month and a bit. The effort allocation was pretty different from what I've done in the past. The game design snapped together very quickly: I had the initial idea, played a couple of games on a spreadsheet to get a feel for the idea, and made one change based on those plays. After that everything felt just right through multiple rounds of playtesting. Likewise the puzzle generation is nowhere near as elaborate as in my previous game, fairly simple methods worked well and provided good variety. Instead I ended up spending silly amounts of time on curating…

Hi HN, My friend and I just launched a vocabulary quiz game. It's a two Player Game where you challenge your opponent with a word and answer their challenge question. Whoever gets the highest score in a round of 5, wins. Currently, words are from Barron's 333 most essential GRE wordlist to help students preparing for the standardized test. You can check out the game at: [Play Store] https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.buildmyvoc... or [Hybrid web app in Ionic - Please allow some time to load] https://buildmyvocab.in/wordsgame We would…

Hey HN, I am a novice web developer, and I built a new webapp game in Angular that combines the game play of Hangman and Wordle. I chose this project because I wanted to learn Angular, while also developing something useful. I have some prior backend experience. And, I was pleasantly surprised with how much you can achieve in the pure JS/Typescript these days. For my app, the backend only sends the daily puzzle data in JSON, while the entire game logic and interactions are completely implemented in the frontend. I wrote around 4000 lines of the frontend code for this project. For me,…

Howdy HN. I wanted an excuse to do some lightweight JS/TS development and to get reacquainted with the Cloudflare stack, so I put together a daily word game. It's partially inspired by NYT's Spelling Bee and Wordle. The main goal is to find a specific word each day that uses each provided letter at least once. There's a secondary goal of finding as many words as possible. Right now progress is all stored on-device, but in the future I might add leaderboards or other competitive elements. Hope y'all enjoy!

I built a procedurally generated word-search game where the puzzle never ends - as you scroll, the grid expands infinitely and new words appear. It’s designed to be quick to pick up, satisfying to play, and a little addictive. The core game works without an account using the pre-defined games, but signing up allows you to generate games using any topic you can think of. I’d love feedback on gameplay, performance, and whether the endless format feels engaging over time. If you try it, I’d really appreciate any bug reports or suggestions. Thanks in advance!

Hi HN — Bracket City is the word puzzle game I made earlier this year and (in part thanks to this community, see https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43622719) managed to license to the Atlantic in April. The game has been growing a lot and I wanted to share the latest: a tool that lets anyone make a Bracket City puzzle — specifically a “Bracket Suburb”! I made this tool to help me construct puzzles, and I’ve been using it every day for months. After the Atlantic launch, I started to get the occasional inquiry about whether there was a way to make your own puzzle. One guy…

My partner and I built a daily word game that has elements of the Mini Crossword, Wordle, and Spelling Bee, with some twists all its own. I’ve been fairly obsessed with the New York Times crossword puzzle ever since I saw the documentary Wordplay about 12 years ago. I started with Mondays and gradually made my way up to Saturdays, and when I began to appreciate the puzzles as aesthetic objects worthy of appreciation and criticism (rather than just a slog to survive and then brag about), I began to wonder what it would be like to create puzzles. But making full crossword puzzles was always…

Three weeks ago GHQ, a strategy board created by Kurt Vonnegut appeared on the front of HN[0]. A friend and I got hooked and spent the last week and half building out a playable online version of the game. It supports pass n'play, multiplayer, and a primitive bot (named kurt) that you can play against. We're also chess nerds so had to ship with an Elo system. Huge kudos to nicolodavis[1] and the maintainers of Boardgame.io [2] - it's the only reason we could build something this good, this fast. The library separates concerns and authority across the server / client seamlessly without…

This is an idea I’ve been kicking around for a long time, and I decided to finally code it up. In the same way that Scrabble decomposes words into letters, what if there was a game that decomposed letters into sub-shapes? There’s a lot of directions this could go, and I’m still exploring the possibility space. Enjoy. Suggestions welcome. It doesn’t have a real name yet.

Hey everyone, I'm Fabio, a very long time lurker here. Today I want to celebrate and share with you, again, a game that I conceived more than 8 years ago. I shared it last week with all its history (if you're curious) [1], but it just stayed in the "shownew" and never reached the main "show" page, hopefully this time it'll do better (:crossed_fingers:)! What changed since last week? Today I've also published the mobile apps for both iOS and Android (last week it was just web), which are also my first mobile apps ever. So I believe it's still a worthwhile post and something to show :) I'd…

Well HN, I've finally produced something I think is worthy of sharing, but I didn't do it "in a weekend". Yeah, it's an iOS puzzle game. And yeah, it's a game I built because I wanted to play it rather than based on market research, so all this sort of makes it the antithesis of a popular HN post. But whatever. Still hoping for some of that patented (har har) expert HN feedback. Critique any part of it except the music. Also, PM me for upgrade codes, or I can post some here if there's any interest. Hi everyone, Wanted to share a game I built. It's called Unscramble! and I believe it's the simplest word building game. Rules: You get a few letters on screen. You need to make one word with all the letters. Tap a letter to select. Tap again to deselect. Faster you go, better you score. If you enter anagrams of the word it's looking for, it gives you extra points. If you are stuck, you can either "Ask Friend" or get Hint. You get extra points for getting the word fast but you don't get penalized for taking too long. I believe the simplicity of the game along with big touch buttons makes it…
