24 alternatives to HTML visualization of a PDF file's internal structure

Hi, I've just finished a rebuild of this function and added a lot of new features: info, page index, minimap, inverted index,... I think it may be useful for inspection, debugging or just as a learning resource showcasing the PDF file format. This is a pet project and I would be happy to receive some feedback! Regards

This tool visualizes the internal structure of PDF files as HTML, allowing users to explore and understand how PDF documents are organized. It includes features like file information, page indexing, minimap navigation… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

I built EmbedPDF: an MIT-licensed, open-source PDF viewer that aims to match all of Adobe Acrobat’s paid features… for free. Already working: - Annotations (highlight, sticky notes, free text, ink) - True redaction (content actually removed) - Search, text selection, zoom, rotation - Runs fully in the browser, no server needed - Drop-in SDK for React, Vue, Preact, vanilla JS Why? Acrobat is heavy, closed, and pricey. I wanted something lightweight, hackable, and embeddable anywhere. Demo: https://app.embedpdf.com/ Website: https://www.embedpdf.com/ GitHub:…

The PDF parser is a rule based parser which uses text co-ordinates (boundary box), graphics and font data. The PDF parser works off text layer and also offers a OCR option to automatically use OCR if there are scanned pages in your PDFs. The OCR feature is based off a modified version of tika which uses tesseract underneath. The PDF Parser offers the following features: * Sections and subsections along with their levels. * Paragraphs - combines lines. * Links between sections and paragraphs. * Tables along with the section the tables are found in. * Lists and nested lists. * Join content…

Hi HN, Nick here. We're super excited to officially launch PDF.js Express [1]. PDF.js Express wraps a modern React UI around the PDF.js rendering engine to enable PDF annotation, form filling, and signing inside your web app. We've also made some improvements to PDF.js text search, and taken a different approach to how the viewer uses the PDF.js rendering API, resulting in sharp graphics at any zoom magnification [2]. Based on our research, more than 70% of those who try to implement these features on top of PDF.js find it too difficult or time-intensive [3]. For those who are successful,…

I made this because the online "make my PDF look scanned" tools want you to upload your file to their servers, which feels sketchy at best. Also, I wasn't happy with the output they produce, I wanted something that looks realistic.

Hi, I have created tool (https://www.helprange.com) to record usage of your PDF documents to display heat maps of this usage consisting of exact clicks and position of mouse inside the document. It works as follows: 1. You are uploading your PDF Document 2. You are getting a secure link to your document 3. You share this link with some group of people 4. When someone opens the link then it can view your document inside special PDF viewer inside the browser 5. We are recording how people are engaging with your document and we can show you the heat map What do you think? This post is…

Hi HN, creator of EmbedPDF here. I recently posted my open-source PDF viewer here, and one thing I really value is that it runs completely offline. I started wondering if we could push that further: could we do full ML layout analysis (detecting tables, headers, columns) directly in the browser? To my surprise, it actually works. The catch: It is far from production-ready. It crashes on most phones, and on older computers, it can be incredibly slow. The why: I believe the future of document processing is local. Many users work with sensitive documents (bank statements, legal contracts) and…

Here's a neat hack I made recently to do basic PDF editing directly in a browser—without having to upload anything to a server. I was initially looking for a way to do simple PDF modification (extracting pages, merging, and adding page numbers). There are some good server-side tools for this (QPDF, PDFTk, PDFBox, iText, Hummus), but for better speed and privacy I really wanted a 100% client-side solution. There are a few good JavaScript PDF libraries for reading and displaying PDFs (pdf.js) and creating PDFs from scratch (jsPDF, PDFKit), but I couldn't find any for editing existing PDFs. So,…

Hey HN, I built a PDF reader that can generate interactive visualizations right inside the document. The goal is to reduce the “intuition gap” when reading dense papers: select a concept, click Visualize, and it tries to produce a solid visual interactive app where you can rotate/zoom/step through (not just a text explanation). Upload any PDF, select text, click Visualize. Demo (no signup): https://zerodistract.com/try/pdf/67cdee74-810b-4f1b-af7d-010... Hey HN, solo dev here. After years of frustration with how LLMs handle complex documents, especially PDFs with tables, I decided to build a solution myself. My approach uses a Markdown conversion step to preserve the table structure, which seems to work surprisingly well for chunking. This little parser is the first public piece of a much larger, privacy-focused AI platform I'm building. I'm pretty much running on fumes financially, so any feedback, critique, or support is massively appreciated. Happy to answer any questions about the approach!

Hi HN, I'm Michał. I posted PDFBolt here about a year ago as a basic HTML to PDF API. Since then I've been rebuilding it around the thing that kept bugging me: every time a designer tweaked a layout, it meant a code change, a deploy, and a prayer that nothing broke in production. I wanted templates that live on the server and version themselves, so my API calls stay the same when the layout changes. Try the editor, no sign-up. Open a sample report, change the data, and download a real PDF: https://pdfbolt.com/try Templates use Handlebars. Your API call sends a templateId +…
