I wanted to build a tool to help people decide when and where to travel. As I started building, I realized that "when" and "where" need separate treatment to be most useful. The map tool handles "where" best: https://championtraveler.com/travel-weather-map/ Clicking through each week would be frustrating for those who know where they want to travel but not when. For these people I built "best time to travel" pages using the same data. https://championtraveler.com/best-time-to-travel/ My hope is this site will help travelers plan. This data is taken…

I love the sunlight and dread the long, dark winter evenings of Northern Europe. I often look up sunrise / sunset times and count off the days until the darkness is gone. Now I've written a terminal app for this (Mac/Linux) Features: a colorful summary of daylight times for your location; projected change over the coming days; handles NO_COLOR and a ---short flag if you dislike the output format. The location is IP-based but you can override this if you're on a VPN. Just create a terminal alias with the --loc flag. The app supports areas in the arctic / antarctic circle too.…

Hello HN, I live in northern part of USA where winters are snowy. Whenever I took long trips, I always wondered what the weather along the route is going to be. For those who live in northern USA, you know weather can change frequently, so when you're traveling matters a lot, not just the route. To solve this problem for myself, I built https://navimodo.com/. NaviModo calculates the route, and then checks weather along the route based on your start time, and displays weather along the route. Change start time, and the whole thing is recalculated. I am not expecting any…

I (Max) built this web app with two friends (Tristan and Shelby) to aid in planning travel and events. Usually you plan things far enough out (say, 3-6 months) that there’s no reliable forecast. So historical data is your best bet. We’ve observed that the last few years is a much better indicator of what the weather will be like than most data sources which aggregate from 1900 or even 1950. We’ve also added tourism stats, and synced it to weather data. This has been particularly eye-opening. It lets us see when a country experiences over-tourism (e.g., Croatia and Austria) relative to its…
