The difference in cost between products that are developed as accessibility tools compared to consumer products is huge. One example is camera glasses where the accessibility product costs ~$3000 (Envision Glasses), and the consumer product costs ~$300 (Ray-Ban Meta). In this case the Ray-Ban Meta is getting accessibility features. The functionality is promising according to reviews, but requires the user to say "Hey meta what am I looking at" every time a scene is to be described. The battery life seem underwhelming as well. It would be nice to have an cheap and open source alternative to…

Hi HN, I'm Daniel Nguyen. In June, I quit my job to start indie hacking full-time. The idea of KTool first came to my mind when I was reading "Ask HN: I'm a software engineer going blind, how should I prepare?"[0] I've been wearing glasses since I was 5. My right eye is basically blind. Doctors said there is no chance to cure it. I was genuinely scared. Like holy shit, if my left eye stops working, my life is done. Since then I've been very conscious about time spent on computer screens. That's when I started using Kindle-related products: to offload as many reading materials as possible to…

Here is a tool I built initially for myself to help with my German and Greek language studies. It started as a hack for creating Anki cards from native language audio. It extracts the words, finds their base forms (lemmas) and groups the examples by the lemma. At some point I realised that I have a transcription with word level timestamps that opens a lot of other opportunities. So I added a mode to click the first and last word in the transcript and it starts looping with the right gap and repeat count. Another feature I use a lot is selecting an audio fragment, sending a predefined prompt…

Hi, I'm Marius from Romania and I'm a physically disabled person developing open and closed source programs. Personal site: https://marius.sucan.ro/ The app I would like to introduce is KeyPress OSD. One of my numerous health problems is a poor eyesight. To help myself and others with this problem, I developed KeyPress OSD: https://keypressosd.com/ . It is made to improve the accessibility of edit fields, to help anyone with poor eyesight be able to see easier what they type. It offers really unique features you cannot find in any other similar app. As a side…

Hello HN! Beginner dev here; read several articles about the challenges faced by users with disabilities (and the impact on businesses). Thought to build a chrome extension to enhance web experience for users with disabilities, after realizing that current solutions focus on auditing web for accessibility. Current features published on Chrome store: Text Magnification | High contrast | Alt text | TTS. Working on (but not published yet) tooltip to explain each feature, additional language support. Will appreciate feedback, collaborations and suggestions of things to improve. GitHub Repo:…
