We're building Parsnip to create a "tech tree" of cooking skills that allows anyone to level up on the building blocks of cooking knowledge while tracking their progress over time. It took us a few iterations to figure out the right product; here's the story of our latest pivot: [https://parsnip.substack.com/p/a-new-hope] The goal is to create a personalized way to learn any recipe on the Internet, then use this as a springboard to help home cooks of all levels solve the problem of repeated meal planning in a 10x better way:…

Hello HN, My girlfriend and I waste too much energy to decide what to eat. Every day, we would text each other, "what do we eat tonight" messages, and go over options and many times spend too much time on deciding. I am an indie dev and created this app to solve my own problem: decide with my girlfriend what to eat for dinner. Initially, I created a simple app, in which we listed all the recipes we ever prepared, and it would propose randomly three of them. We would then choose together one of them. This app[0] turned into a tinder-like app, which would propose every day a set of recipes to…

Hi HN, COVID lockdowns made me and my wife cook a lot more at home, and we had a need to streamline our recipe management woes. These were some of the problems we identified: - Most recipe websites are what I call "mommy blogs", and the principal problem is that the recipe ingredient list and instructions are buried in a SEO-laden essay that we don't care about. We were sharing links to our favorite recipes, but links don't allow you to skip past the unnecessary essay prefacing the recipe. We knew we wanted a way to have recipes uncompromised by unrelated essays. - Popular recipe aggregating…

A cookbook that is based on principles and feelings, not measurements. I pretty much never follow recipes when I cook, but people still tend to think I cook decently well. Curious about anyone's feedback or thoughts about how to improve this cookbook! Ideas for a custom domain name also welcome.

TLDR; I applied the concept of "don't make me think" to the task of selecting meals, and assembling the shopping list for your grocery run. The basic idea for what I wanted is very simple: Rather than making a shopping list, I wanted to create a re-usable 'meal', with a list of ingredients I'd need to add to my shopping list to make that meal. Then, after selecting meals for the week I'd have a quick 'check' step, where I'm prompted to check the cupboard for each ingredient, before it's added to the shopping list (ie: I'll need ground beef to make tacos, but I already HAVE ground beef in the…
