Hey HN! I’m Alex, and one of my favorite ways to learn languages is by reading novels. Currently I’m reading 三体 (3 body problem), but one problem I've always had is it takes ages to look up words, and add them to Anki flashcards so I can remember them. 三体 is especially brutal with so much sci-fi vocab. That’s why I built Readly. I snap a pic of the page I’m reading, it loads the text in-app and lets me lookup words, add to Anki-style flashcards, or ask AI questions about the text, all in a single tap. It's a huge time saver. My specific learning strategy, if anyone wants to replicate it: 1.…

The previous submission [1] didn't catch on, so re-trying with a less substantive title! [1] https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41680056

This was more of a sandbox to play with Raphael and Flot than anything else but I think there are some interesting statistics in there. It'd be awesome to do this over time but I really don't have the spare time required.

Like many Chinese Americans, I can speak Chinese fairly well, but I struggle with reading and writing. I've always wanted to improve, but I've never had the time to sit down and study. SparkleChinese is a browser extension that forces me to get better at reading Chinese by swapping English words on the pages I read with their Chinese equivalents. SparkleChinese is free and runs entirely on-device. Full disclosure: I vibe-coded this using Opus 5 and Fable 5.

Just for fun, I built a language learning tool. It represents Chinese and Japanese as graphs of characters, with connections indicating given characters can form a word. It can also decompose characters to give clues on how they're pronounced, analyzes words to understand which ones are commonly used together, and more. It's fully interactive, supports offline use, generates flashcards, has sentences from humans and from AI, and plenty of other features. Check out the README for details. https://github.com/mreichhoff/HanziGraph

Hello HN, I built DuLink to solve a personal problem: my primary language is English, but my mother’s primary language is Mandarin Chinese. I often find articles on health or current events that I want to share with her, but the friction of copy/pasting and Google Translate meant she rarely read them. What it does: DuLink takes an article URL, extracts the core content to strip out clutter, and then generates a static, translated reading view. It preserves the semantic HTML structure (headers, lists) but removes the original site's JS and ad tracking. The "Why": Existing tools either…

Hey all! Super excited to share this! If you're familiar with the r/InternetIsBeautiful sub-reddit, then you'll enjoy this. I built the website as a fun side project project over the weekend, and it re-imagines what r/internetisbeautiful would be if it was a newsletter. It's meant to be a completely free and community generated resource of the most interesting, useful and awesome websites from the depths of the internet. The list is tiny right now and I would love to hear your recommendations of websites that you think we should include. Hope you enjoy it, and would love to hear…

linkrdr (www.linkrdr.com), a personal link aggregator, was directly inspired by http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3555923 I read while browsing on HN. It's still a bit rough, but the concept is an interesting one and people have already shown interest. Let me know what you think. Also, if anyone knows a good UX designer, email me :)
