Hi HN! Last year the project I launched here got a lot of good feedback on creating speech to speech AI on the ESP32. Recently I revamped the whole stack, iterated on that feedback and made our project fully open-source—all of the client, hardware, firmware code. This Github repo turns an ESP32-S3 into a realtime AI speech companion using the OpenAI Realtime API, Arduino WebSockets, Deno Edge Functions, and a full-stack web interface. You can talk to your own custom AI character, and it responds instantly. I couldn't find a resource that helped set up a reliable, secure websocket (WSS) AI…

hi! video[0] The idea is you could carry around this hardware and ask it any questions about the conference. Who is speaking, what are they speaking about etc... it connects via WebRTC to a LLM and you get a bunch of info. This is a workshop/demo project I did for a conference. When I was talking to the organizers I mentioned that I enjoy doing hardware + WebRTC projects. They thought that was cool and so we ran with it. I have been doing these ESP32 + voice ai projects for a bit now. Started with an embedded sdk for livekit[1] that jul 2024 and been noodling with it since then. This…

Hi HN - we’ve been working on a new UX for building realtime voice agents with minimal code. We’ve built a ton of voice agents in the past few years. We noticed that voice agent dev follows a pretty typical pattern: ⁃ Start with a “single prompt” version that dumps all relevant context and instructions into a one prompt, and provide access to all necessary tools the agent will ever need ⁃ As the agent gets more complex and users discover more edge cases, break the single-prompt version out into a more complex structure that gives a user more control over the precise conversational flow.…

Hi HN folks ! I am the author of AVA, a self hosted AI Voice Agent that plugs into Asterisk/Freepbx so you own all the aspects of an AI Voice agent in your own infrastructure. It uses Asterisk native Audiosocket/RTP with python engine to run STT,LLM and TTS loop. The project support several full providers openai, gemini, grok, elevenlabs out of the box and also provides options to build custom pipelines by choosing different stt tts and llm. It also supports full local agent if you have a GPU with 25GB RAM which enables realtime conversation along with tool calling. I started this…

Hi there - Ben from LiveKit here! If you’re curious about OpenAI’s brand-new Realtime API and speech-to-speech model, check out this hosted playground and play with the model yourself. If you’d like to learn more about how this came together, read on. If you’re like me, you’ve probably been wondering what novel things a model like this can do in an API setting with unfettered access to the system prompt and other parameters. I’ve been fortunate to have had early access through my work at LiveKit, where we’ve built open-source developer tooling that makes deploying this model in a production…

We kept hitting the same wall building voice AI systems. Pipecat and LiveKit are great projects, genuinely. But getting it to production took us weeks of plumbing - wiring things together, handling barge-ins, setting up telephony, Knowledge base, tool calls, handling barge in etc. And every time we needed to tweak agent behavior, you were back in the code and redeploying. We just wanted to change a prompt and test it in 30 seconds. Thats why Vapi retell etc exist. So we wrote the entire code and open sourced it as a Visual drag-and-drop for voice agents ( same as vapi or n8n for voice).…
