A developer's machine accumulates tools fast. A Rust CLI you compiled last year, a Python formatter installed via `uv`, a language server pulled from npm, a terminal emulator from a curl script, a Go binary built from source. Each came from a different package manager, each with its own install incantation you half-remember. I wanted a way to declare what I need without adopting a complex system like Nix or Ansible just for a single laptop. The result was a plain old Makefile. I wrote a short post on using Make (along with a tiny bash script and fzf) to create a searchable, single-command…

Devbox is a command-line tool that lets you easily create isolated shells and containers. You start by defining the list of packages required by your development environment, and devbox uses that definition to create an isolated environment just for your application. In practice, Devbox works similar to a package manager like yarn – except the packages it manages are at the operating-system level (the sort of thing you would normally install with brew or apt-get). `makedown` allows you to organise your shell scripts in one or several markdown files, by mix and matching different scripting languages for various commands and needs. zsh/bash/sh, python, javascript or anything else available on your system. Handy for replacing one-line-based package.json scripts or shell-based Makefiles. One can also write documentation and explanations to various commands in the same `.md` file. Most editors highlight correctly most languages in the markdown code blocks, even when you use several scripting languages. Here is a demo .md file…

Hi all! A little background: I've been working on natto.dev, a spatial environment for JavaScript. I'm really excited about new interfaces for code (leveraging metaphors we're good at, spatial reasoning, making state visible, design tools, etc). With all the buzz around PyScript, I discovered Pyodide and got it working inside natto. This Python version is a stripped down version of https://natto.dev (eg interactive outputs, multiplayer) so please check that out if this interests you. I'm excited to share this spatial environment for Python. Imagine Jupyter cells arranged on a 2D…

When building a plugin system for an application, avoiding dependency conflicts is critical. To address this, I created Wetlands – a lightweight Conda environment manager. Wetlands not only simplifies the creation of isolated Conda environments with specific dependencies, but also allows you to run arbitrary Python code within those environments and retrieve the results. It uses the multiprocessing.connection and pickle modules for inter-process communication. Additionally, one can easily use shared memory between the environments, making data exchange more efficient. Docs:…

Hey HN, I'm Ivan Burazin, and for the past 15 years, I have been on a mission to streamline software development environments. Today, I'm excited to share the culmination of that journey: Daytona, an open-source Development Environment Manager designed to finally solve the issue of setting up dev environments, whether local or remote. My journey in cloud development began in 2009 when my cofounder and I we launched the first (or at least one of) commercial Cloud IDEs, Codeanywhere. We developed everything in-house: the IDE, the orchestrator, and more. We garnered interest from over 2.5…
