After reading "During Helene, I Just Wanted a Plain Text Website" on Sparkbox (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46494734) , I built safe-now.live – a text-first emergency info site for USA and Canada. No JavaScript, no images, under 10KB. Pulls live FEMA disasters, NWS alerts, weather, and local resources. This is my first live website ever so looking for critical feedback on the website. Please feel free to look around. https://safe-now.live

I was walking around New York last month during some light rain and noticed about half the people had umbrellas open. When the rain picked up a few minutes later, that number jumped closer to 80%. It got me thinking it'd be cool to track this somehow, so I built a website! I am taking a sidewalk livestream, feeding it into a YOLO model for people tracking, then sending a frame of each detected person to Gemini 2.0 Flash, which returns structured JSON about each person's clothing and if they're holding an umbrella. I also had fun making the site look like a TV weather channel. I showed some…

I have added OpenZones to Flowx, my Android weather app[0]. OpenZones are regions covering disaster zones where all the pro data in the app is freely available. I have created an 1200km diameter OpenZone over Florida with Hurricane Dorian approaching. So if you add Florida to the app, you can view radar, NOAA's GFS, NAM and HRRR models, CMC GDPS and RDPS models, and the DWD (Germany) ICON model. There are also predicted hurricane tracks from the NOAA and CMC ensemble models which I find extremely valuable to predict the possible paths of Dorian. This YouTube video[1] shows an example of the…

This was posted before but I'm quite pleased to share a major update for https://oikolab.com. We now have available seven decades of hourly weather data starting from 1950 for any location in the world, thanks to the recent publication of ERA5 reanalysis data from European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). ERA5 is gap-free, gridded dataset generated using data assimilation method (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Data_assimilation), similar to NWP models but with the benefit of hindsight. As far as we're aware of, we're the first weather data…

This is a service I've built to provide equirectangular cloud maps of the whole Earth, updated every 3 hours, for free. It's based on infrared and visible light data from EUMETSAT, processed to enhance the clouds and try to reduce the impact of surface temperatures on the final image. I built it because it's surprisingly hard to find these kinds of images in a format that's useful to developers and hobbyists. I was building a 3D ISS tracker and wanted to include live clouds but couldn't find anything good, so I got sidetracked, and here we are.

We built Maptoolkit.org - a free, production-grade vector maps service built on OpenStreetMap and MapLibre. Map rendering and tile hosting have historically been either expensive (Google, Mapbox) or complex to maintain yourself. (Plus: Their maps are car-focused.) Our maps feature max data zoom 15, global hill-shading, 3D terrain, contour lines, water depths, and specialized styles (like Hiking, Cycling, Winter). No sign up or API keys required. You can use it like this: ``` const map = new maplibregl.Map({ container: 'map', style: 'https://styles.maptoolkit.org/summer.json',…

I built a weather and hurricane tracking site for the Eastern Caribbean islands (https://dewedda.com). PHP, MySQL, Cloudflare, Visual Crossing API, Leaflet.js for maps. The interesting part wasn't the stack. It was realizing how much the interpretation layer matters when you're building for a specific region. Wind descriptions, "feels like" calculations, condition summaries, all tuned for temperate climates by default. I've been reworking them for the Eastern Caribbean audience. Wrote about what I learned: https://hydn.dev/82-degrees-feels-like/
