Products that do what Metaphor - The Modern Metadata Platform does

Hi HN, We are the team at Metaphor Data, backed by a16z & Amplify Partners. Today we are excited to announce the launch of our product Metaphor, a modern metadata platform that serves as a system of record for your organization's data ecosystem. Metaphor provides full visibility into your data landscape and empowers both data producers and consumers to work more effectively and efficiently. For producers, Metaphor enables quick and accurate impact analysis as well as offers critical insights like data consumption patterns and resource utilization. For consumers, it brings technical metadata…

Hi HN! I am Maria, solo founder of DataQA (https://dataqa.ai/), a tool to search and label documents for various NLP tasks (e.g. entity extraction, entity linking, etc). I have worked as a data scientist and ML engineer for the better part of a decade, and over that time have specialised mainly in applications involving natural language processing (NLP). One of the key questions I have always had at the back of my mind is whether my time was well spent. Whenever I spent more time on feature engineering or trying different models, I always wondered whether I would get better…

Hi HN! I’m Alex from Parabola (https://parabola.io). Parabola is a visual programming tool for creating functional data flows that everyone can use. It’s entirely drag-and-drop, handles data sizes much larger than a traditional spreadsheet, calculates everything live, and can run your flows on a schedule of your choosing. I used to work in strategy consulting, doing data analytics for SMBs and Fortune 500 companies. The amount of time wasted on menial tasks was astounding. Things like cleaning data, generating custom reports, creating human workflows to solve shortcomings in third…

Hi HN, Over the past 6 months I've been working on a technical book focused on helping aspiring data scientists to get hands-on experience with cloud computing environments using the Python ecosystem. The book is targeted at readers already familiar with libraries such as Pandas and scikit-learn that are looking to build out a portfolio of applied projects. To author the book, I used the Leanpub platform to provide drafts of the text as I completed each chapter. To typeset the book, I used the R bookdown package by Yihui Xie to translate my markdown into a PDF format. I also used Google docs…

Hey HN, Data quality matters more than ever. Our world increasingly relies on AI and proprietary datasets to fine-tune models. But as many of us know, garbage in often results in garbage out. Bad data can cost millions, especially when it informs important decisions like public health policy or interest rate hedging. Today’s data engineers need a flexible, secure, and performant data quality toolkit designed for the modern workflow. But current solutions were built a decade ago and don't support big data technologies, such as Spark. This is why we're building Spotlight - the data quality…

Two and a half years ago, Edward, Dylan, and I started this journey to build a new database for an old problem that has long plagued the infrastructure software industry. Today, we are proud to announce that this database, TiDB, is production ready. Abraham Lincoln once said, ‘the best way to predict the future is to create it.’ The future we predicted 771 days ago we now have created, because of the hard work and dedication of not just every member of our team, but also every contributor, user, and partner in our open source community. Today, we celebrate and pay gratitude to the power of…

Preface: we love Hacker News. It's been one of the constant good things in all of our lives, and is by far our favorite place to talk with people about what we're doing. I figured it was worth doing a special post for something we've been cooking up, rather than just linking to what everyone else gets. So here it is. We just turned on a product we're calling "Elastic Deployments". These are MongoDB clusters that scale vertically with no intervention. As a database grows, it has access to more RAM, IOPs and CPU. More here:…

One year ago, I downloaded the news.arc code and decided that I would teach myself programming by building a better aggregator. At that time, I had some rudimentary HTML knowledge, and little FORTRAN under my belt. I knew that I wanted an aggregator that could support a wide range of submissions, and one that could scale without losing quality for the user. Hubski is what I have to show for my time and effort. The easiest way to describe Hubski is to say that it uses a commenting system akin to HN or Reddit, but uses a sharing scheme like Twitter. You have a personal feed comprised of the…

Hello HN, I am Sonal, a data consultant from India. For the past few months(and years!), I have been working on an entity resolution tool to build a single source of truth for customers, suppliers, products and parts. Here is a short demo of Zingg in action https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOabyZxN9b0 As a data consultant, I often struggled to build unified views of core entities on the datalake and the warehouse. Data spread across different systems has variations and consistencies making Customer 360, KYC, AML, segmentation, personalization and other analytics difficult. As I…

Hey everyone! Like many data analysts and engineers, I love SQL and the dbt ecosystem. So it bothers me that we have to use separate tools for product analytics. We do our transformations, BI work, and ad-hoc queries in SQL, but when it's time to look at funnels and flows, we have to use (and procure) a separate platform like Mixpanel or Amplitude. This dbt package is a (very rough) start at fixing that. With it, you can create event streams and run funnel analyses via dbt[0]. More features like flows and retention are coming soon! But I'm mostly curious how you all are doing product…

A couple of years ago, we had an interesting idea. When a development team within an organization consists of around 10 members or fewer, controlling the risks associated with database changes might be achieved through trust and real-time communication. However, as the team grows, the responsibilities within the team become more specialized. Imagine a scenario where different branches of the business exist, each with its own set of developers, team leads, testers, testing leads, DBAs, and more. Relying solely on traditional communication methods becomes increasingly challenging when it comes…
