Products that do what Midsommer" or a way to create self-organizing maps in JavaScript does
I've been obsessed with self-organizing maps (or Kohonen maps) for a few years now, and I made a library that implements a bare-bones SOM algorithm in JavaScript. A SOM is basically a kinda-old school—but effective—way to do dimensionality reduction and clustering. Midsommer, my library, also comes with a Svelte component to visualize the resulting SOM, and it uses a force-directed graph to display the underlying shape of the map (cosine similarity between adjacent neurons informs the edge weights, basically). You can see the code here, as well as a couple examples, including one that…

I went down the rabbit hole on a side project and ended up building this: Strange Attractors(https://blog.shashanktomar.com/posts/strange-attractors). It’s built with three.js. Working on it reminded me of the little "maths for fun" exercises I used to do while learning programming in early days. Just trying things out, getting fascinated and geeky, and being surprised by the results. I spent way too much time on this, but it was extreme fun. My favorite part: someone pointed me to the Simone Attractor on Threads. It is a 2D attractor and I asked GPT to extrapolate it to…

In the past I've used declarative diagram generation tools like Mermaid.js a lot for quickly drawing up things but for presentations or deliverables I find that I have to then move the generated diagrams over to a tool like Lucidchart which allows full control of the organization and customization. Therefore I am now working on this to combine the benefits of both into just one tool which can do both functions. The project is certainly in the early stages but if you find yourself making architecture diagrams I'd love to hear your thoughts on the idea or even a Github issue for a feature…

I've open sourced a JavaScript to WASM compiler. It's an experimental tool, but given the semantics I already implemented, I'm fairly certain I am able to eventually cover 100% of JavaScript spec. Any ideas, questions or critique welcomed! If you are interested in WASM, especially with new proposals like WASM GC or exception handling, it might be a good source of seeing these features in action - the project has a few thousand lines of hand written WAT so far.

Hi HN! My latest side project is knowledge graph that maps the French culinary network using data extracted from restaurant reviews from LeFooding.com. The project uses LLMs to extract structured information from unstructured text. Some technical aspects you may be interested in: - Used structured generation to reliably parse unstructured text into a consistent schema - Tested multiple models (Mistral-7B-v0.3, Llama3.2-3B, gpt4o-mini) for information extraction - Created an interactive visualization using gephi-lite and Retina (WebGL) - Built (with Claude) a simple Flask web app to clean and…

We show the potential of modern, embedded graph databases in the browser by demonstrating a fully in-browser chatbot that can perform Graph RAG using Kuzu (the graph database we're building) and WebLLM, a popular in-browser inference engine for LLMs. The post retrieves from the graph via a Text-to-Cypher pipeline that translates a user question into a Cypher query, and the LLM uses the retrieved results to synthesize a response. As LLMs get better, and WebGPU and Wasm64 become more widely adopted, we expect to be able to do more and more in the browser in combination with LLMs, so a lot of…

We've open-sourced Klarity - a tool for analyzing uncertainty and decision-making in LLM token generation. It provides structured insights into how models choose tokens and where they show uncertainty. What Klarity does: - Real-time analysis of model uncertainty during generation - Dual analysis combining log probabilities and semantic understanding - Structured JSON output with actionable insights - Fully self-hostable with customizable analysis models The tool works by analyzing each step of text generation and returns a structured JSON: - uncertainty_points: array of {step, entropy,…

When I read papers, I have to jump between multiple tabs to find the dataset, code, videos, peer reviews, and so on. I tried to fix this with this project. It started as a project just for papers on arXiv, but after its initial success on Twitter (got like 1.9k views: the most I have gotten for a post), I have now expanded it to include other openly available papers from PubMed Central, bioRxiv, medRxiv, and eLife. These papers have been linked with their genes, proteins, diseases, drugs, clinical trials, 3D protein structures, code, and cited and similar papers. This project now has four…

In an effort to understand it, I put together a simple, pure python implementation of HNSW, an approximate nearest neighbor library. Learned a lot, and I think for anyone interested in vector search it's an exercise that's absolutely worth doing. The code is optimized (imo) for readability, and working (albeit, quite slowly) on putting together a tutorial that walks through the motivation and implementation of HNSW. There's also working code examples for using the library for text and image search with sentence transformers and CLIP!

Just wanted to share with HN a simple/minimal open source Python library that generates SVG files visualizing two dimensional data and distributions, in case others find it useful or interesting. I wrote it as a fun project, mostly because I found that the standard libraries in Python generated unnecessarily large SVG files. One nice property is that I can configure the visuals through CSS, which allows me to support dark/light mode browser settings. The graphs are specified as JSON files (the repository includes a few examples). It supports scatterplots, line plots, histograms,…

Hi HN, I've always been interested in fractals, especially the Mandelbrot and Julia sets. A few years ago I created a 2d viewer of this inherently 4d space. But the other day I decided to ask Claude and GPT how to make this a full RT 3d explorer. A few hours later and this was vibe coded. To use it you can use the mouse to rotate the fractal the the mouse wheel to zoom in and out. to map from 4d to 3d, one of the dims is mapped to an adjustable slider. the there is also a clipping plane slider to help visualize the internal structures of the fractal. I have mixed feelings about vibe coding.…

Hey HN, I’m the author. I built Misata because existing tools (Faker, Mimesis) are great for random rows but terrible for relational or temporal integrity. I needed to generate data for a dashboard where "Timesheets" must happen after "Project Start Date," and I wanted to define these rules via natural language. How it works: LLM Layer: Uses Groq/Llama-3.3 to parse a "story" into a JSON schema constraint config. Simulation Layer: Uses Vectorized NumPy (no loops) to generate data. It builds a DAG of tables to ensure parent rows exist before child rows (referential integrity).…

Hi all, I'm Ivan, and together with Alex, we're building a diagram visualization tool for codebases. Alex and I are devs, and we've noticed that recently we've been super productive at writing code (prompting :D). But when it comes to understanding big systems, prompting doesn't work that well — for that, diagrams are best imo. Most tools out there don't scale to big projects (e.g. PyTorch), so we're building CodeBoarding — a recursive visualizer for codebases. It starts from the highest level of abstractions and lets you dive deeper. We use static analysis and LLM agents. The control-flow…

Models are referred to as 'spiky' entities - they have relative strengths and weaknesses. Model map visualizes these strengths and weaknesses in 3D and give you the ability to fly around this 3D space (there is a hidden Star Wars themed mini game for pilots brave enough to try). Spikiness is an intuitive mental model but the typical way of visualizing this spikiness is a generic table. Is this useful? Maybe? Is it fun? Yes. You should try the flight controls. Click anywhere then use WASD + mouse to fly. Shoot projectiles to explore nodes. Built on top of 3D Graph OSS library I made for…

Hi HN, I built NOMA (Neural-Oriented Machine Architecture), a systems language where reverse-mode autodiff is a compiler pass (lowered to LLVM IR). My goal is to treat model parameters as explicit, growable memory buffers. Since NOMA compiles to standalone native binaries (no Python runtime), it allows using realloc on weights mid-training. This makes "self-growing" architectures a system primitive rather than a complex framework hack. I just pushed a reproducible benchmark (Self-Growing XOR) to validate the methodology: it compares NOMA against PyTorch and C++, specifically testing how…

Hi HN, I recently built a simple Chrome extension called Twinbox to help organize DMs on X (formerly Twitter - yes, I reminded you again haha). The idea came from my own frustration with managing multiple conversations – it’s easy for things to get lost, especially when juggling personal, work, and project-related chats. The extension lets you: - Create folders to categorize your DMs (e.g., “Work,” “Friends,” “Projects”). - Keep things tidy and easier to follow up on. It’s free to use, lightweight, and privacy-focused – all the organization happens locally in your browser. I’d love to hear…

Hi HN, I built EdgeVec, a vector database that runs entirely in the browser. It implements HNSW (Hierarchical Navigable Small World) graphs for approximate nearest neighbor search. Performance: - Sub-millisecond search at 100k vectors (768 dimensions, k=10) - 148 KB gzipped bundle - 3.6x memory reduction with scalar quantization Use cases: browser extensions with semantic search, local-first apps, privacy-preserving RAG. Technical: Written in Rust, compiled to WASM. Uses AVX2 SIMD on native, simd128 on WASM. IndexedDB for browser persistence. npm:…

Hi, We are building an open-source framework for loading and structuring LLM context to create accurate and explainable LLM answers using knowledge graphs and vector stores. We built the tool with four main concepts in mind: 1. Loader -> uses dlt in the backend to load and structure the data 2. Cognify step -> creates a graph with summaries, labels and factoids that are interconnected across the documents and stored as a representation in the vector store 3. Optimizer -> Uses DSPy to optimize LLM queries, and we plan to extend it to most of the knobs we can turn, like chunking etc. 4. Search…
