i made sink. it's a simple little tool that continuously syncs folders between 2 devices. no cloud, no email, flash drives, no bs. it just uses your local wifi. run it on your machines, tell them to trust each other, and you're set. and if you manage to edit the same file at once, it handles the conflict and saves both copies. for anyone who just wants to get files from point a to b without the headache. hope it makes your life a bit less annoying. github: https://github.com/sirbread/sink binary:…

Hey HN, I want to share with you something I and my four colleagues have been working on for the last several years. It’s a whiteboarding and notes tool called Muse[1]. We just released a 2.0 version which includes local-first sync. A little backstory: I’m one of the authors of the 2019 essay Local-first software[2]. (Past HN discussions[3][4].) The thesis is to reclaim some of the ownership over our data that we’ve lost in the transition from filesystems to cloud/SaaS. Hello HN. I worked on this small project recently called dsync. I have a few directories where I keep adding stuff and I need to sync them to an external drive from time to time. In the spirit of "write your own tools", I wrote my own. The tool itself is really simple. It tries to sync source directories or files to a destination directory based on size and modification time, basically copying the source files if they don't match. dsync can use multiple threads (specified via an option).
