This started out as a weekend hack with gpt-4-mini, using the very basic strategy of "just ask the ai to ocr the document". But this turned out to be better performing than our current implementation of Unstructured/Textract. At pretty much the same cost. I've tested almost every variant of document OCR over the past year, especially trying things like table / chart extraction. I've found the rules based extraction has always been lacking. Documents are meant to be a visual representation after all. With weird layouts, tables, charts, etc. Using a vision model just make sense! In…

I started working as a freelancer [in Finland] a year ago and was surprised to learn that no decent contract template was available for direct assignments. There were some free contract templates available for intermediated assignments, but not for direct assignments. The "golden standard" of contract templates in Finland is an extremely heavy-handed and expensive template that costs ~500€ PER YEAR to use. Personally at the time I decided to just do a DIY contract for my first freelancing project. Over time, as I got more engaged in the Finnish freelancing community, I realized that many…

A simple tool for people like me whose brain hurts when they read any legal document full of bloated jargon. It's called Docu and it's makes contract review super simple. It gives you a very readable summary, highlights beneficial clauses, flags potential risks, and gives you actions you can take to make the contract work for you. Build on OpenAI assistant API using a combination of prompts. https://docu.review

We're open-sourcing 14 components & examples today for PDF, DOCX, and XLSX viewers, plus bounding box citations, file upload, e-signature, and more. It's MIT licensed and fully customizable. Demo video here: https://share.extend.ai/kRmSGKRF When we started, we tried every file viewer and document component library we could find. Unfortunately, none of them had all the functionality (and polish) that we wanted, so we ended up building our own for https://extend.ai/. It was only ever meant to be internal, but enough customers kept asking for it that we decided to…

hey hn, i’m alana, founder of basecase and creator of docbase www.getdocbase.com docbase is an open-source alternative to docsend, which lets you securely share documents and track engagement in real-time. with docbase, you can upload any document, get a secure link (with or without a password or expiration date), and view who interacts with it and when. one main use case is for founders to send their memos/decks to potential investors. as a founder and investor myself, it’s a tool i use all the time to both send and receive pitch documents. the idea came from a tweet [0], which…
