Products that do what Open-Source, Google Zanzibar Inspired Authorization Service does
Hey HN, I recently shared my thoughts on why Google Zanzibar is a great solution for implementing authorization[1] and why we decided to build Warrant’s core authz service using key concepts from the Zanzibar paper. As I mentioned in the post, we recently open sourced the authz service powering our managed cloud service, Warrant Cloud[2], so I thought I’d share it with everyone here. Cheers! There are quite a few authentication services and libraries out there, but the vast majority treats tenants / organizations as an afterthought - in case of Firebase, tenants are literally in a different product. In B2B apps, users, tenants and data as fundamentally interrelated - users belong to tenants and authenticate in order to access data that belongs to the tenant. This means that user and auth data belong in the same database where the tenant data is stored (in our case, Postgres), and that the database should be aware of the user identity and control the access to tenant data.…

Hi folks, I’m one of the maintainers and co-founder of the Go OSS project Permify (https://github.com/Permify/permify), an open-source authorization infrastructure inspired by Google Zanzibar. I would like to share a post where we aimed to provide a brief overview of how we integrated WASM with Golang to provide a richer user experience in our open-source playground. You can use the playground to create and test any authorization logic in a browser. The playground has three main sections: Schema: to model your authorization logic through our domanin specific language we…

Hi HN, I previously wore SWE/SRE hats on GCP. Later, I was on the other side, managing thousands of machines. The friction points of onboarding and operating cloud systems are personal problems to me. I’ve found it hard to keep track of all the random cloud resources floating around, especially as my team’s assets proliferated. Occasionally, there is a resource affecting an outage but no one remembers where it is. I am constantly frustrated by existing tooling. APIs can work, after you’ve navigated the byzantine documentation, but I often find myself doing ad-hoc tasks which are best…

I created Cloud Looking Glass as a CS grad research project to build a better status page for public cloud platforms — independent and based on what users actually experience (in my experience, cloud providers tend to underreport events on public status pages). I modeled it as a time series problem: all tests are repeated every 5 minutes from three unrelated cloud accounts per platform (currently ~1,000 tests/min). The system provides full data plane, control plane, and networking coverage for AWS us-east-1, plus network testing across 25 other providers. Full coverage for GCP and Azure…

Text: Hey HN, Zan here, cofounder of Coherence (withcoherence.com). We’re excited to announce the launch of serverless deployment options for both AWS and Google Cloud Platform (GCP), both of which are free-tier compatible. This new functionality enables developers to deploy applications directly to AWS Lambda and GCP Cloud Run, leveraging the power of serverless architectures without intermediary platforms. We hope that these provide a way to use Coherence for low-volume or R&D type projects, and open up some interesting new use cases! You can learn more in our docs: AWS Lambda -…
