Alternatives
Products that do what Open-source version of OpenAI's Deep Research does
Last night, OpenAI launched Deep Research, a tool for AI-powered deep web searches. In a few hours, I built an open-source alternative using Next.js, Firecrawl, and Vercel's AI SDK. Instead of using a fine-tuned version of o3, this method uses Firecrawl's extract + search with a reasoning model to deep research the web. The system is built using Vercel’s AI SDK for handling requests and streaming data, with an agent-based approach that manages search, extraction, and analysis. It uses Firecrawl to find and extract structured data, which is then processed through a progressive analysis system…

The first ever AI peer reviewed research article just got approved. It’s kinda crazy how advanced AI have come to replace researchers. I've just been using Deep Research on ChatGPT and Perplexity a lot to write and research complex technical reports for my boss. He loves the reports and it has decreased my workload a ton but I still have some frustrations with it. None of them provide an API that gets me the same quality of output you would with the applications. I wanted something with more control on the LLMs, swappable with the reasoning new models that came out. Not just prompt →…

Hi HN, I'm one of the creators of Nanobrowser, an open-source Chrome extension that lets you automate web tasks using AI agents. We were inspired by the potential of tools like OpenAI's Operator, but we wanted something that was: -Open-Source:You can see the code, modify it, and contribute to the project. -Browser-Based:No complex setups or server deployments. It runs directly in your browser. -Customizable:You can tailor the agent's behavior to your specific needs. -BYO LLM:Bring your own large language model API key (OpenAI, Anthropic,or even local models), No vendor lock-in. -Privacy…

Hey HN, We’ve been heads-down building MOSS - a semantic memory layer that brings AI-powered search and personalization fully on-device (No cloud | No latency | No data leaving the user’s device) We just launched a live demo showing MOSS running entirely in-browser, performing lightning-fast semantic search over local in-browser VectorDB. This unlocks a new class of privacy-first, hybrid AI experiences that work even without a server connection. If you’re curious about: - how to run AI search right inside the browser - the technical challenges behind on-device vector search - why we believe…

I've built an open-source implementation of Google DeepMind's AlphaEvolve system called OpenEvolve. It's an evolutionary coding agent that uses LLMs to discover and optimize algorithms through iterative evolution. Try it out: https://github.com/codelion/openevolve What is this? OpenEvolve evolves entire codebases (not just single functions) by leveraging an ensemble of LLMs combined with automated evaluation. It follows the evolutionary approach described in the AlphaEvolve paper but is fully open source and configurable. I built this because I wanted to experiment with…

Hi HN! I am an undergrad student trying to build interesting things with AI. Recently, I was looking for a dataset I could use for a new project. I realized that it is really frustrating to go through all the government websites (with terrible UX) just to find some usable dataset. I set out to build a GitHub for datasets, named DataHub. Right now, we have more than 1000 datasets from Montréal and New York City, with more cities coming soon (and possible government agencies). All of this is wrapped into a powerful search. It's a breeze to find a dataset to work on. I'd be interested to know…

Hey HN! We built https://keenable.ai, a different web search API for AI agents. Keenable searches our own 100B+ page index. We are focused on low cost and latency (p95 <250ms from us-east). We don’t believe in benchmaxxing, so we open-sourced our internal benchmarking suite, NEEDLE (available at https://keenableai.github.io/needle): a live benchmark that compares Keenable with other search APIs on fresh agent-like queries. I spent seven years at Amazon as a scientist working on web grounding for Alexa/AGI, and my co-founder Andrey previously led search at…

The goal was to bring down the cost at the context eng. level. We do it with Layout Memoization. Instead of dumping HTML into the context window, we have built a continual learning browser harness (read only for now). We have built an early prototype for you to try out, where you can: 1. Spins up a browser instance 2. Extract any structured or tabular data from anywhere on the open-web 3. And you can do all this at the cost of a vector search Would love to hear your thoughts on this. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

Hi hacker news, My name is Dillion and I'm the creator of llm.report. A few months ago, I was frustrated by the lack of observability into the OpenAI API. All of us are left in the dark about API performance, latency, cost calculation, cost breakdown, and more. I just wanted to know more about how my AI app is performing in production and make data-driven decisions to improve the product. So I ended up just building it myself. There are three parts to the platform: 1. OpenAI API Dashboard (no-code) - Enter your OpenAI key and get access to detailed insights straight from the OpenAI API…

Hey hackers, the world needs more AI researchers with good taste, and hardcore software folks have some of the best. Many software friends mentioned they learn better from implementations than from papers, but existing open-source examples rarely go beyond basic nanoGPT-level demos. To help bridge that gap, I spent the last two months full-time reimplementing and open-sourcing a self-contained implementation of every major modern deep learning technique from scratch. The result is beyond-nanoGPT, containing 20k+ lines of handcrafted, minimal, and extensively annotated PyTorch code. I'd love…
