24 alternatives to Pinecone Explorer – Desktop GUI for the Pinecone vector database
2 weeks ago, I posted chroma-exploter here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46624731 and it received a lot of positive feedback. So I decided to build a similar tool for Pinecone. While both being vector databases, Pinecone is more enterprise grade and a lot more functionally rich than Chroma, hence a separate app. This Mac native app makes it easier to work with Pinecone data, with all types of indexes (dense, sparse and hybird) and supports reranking.
Pinecone Explorer is a desktop graphical interface for managing and interacting with the Pinecone vector database. Built for developers who work with vector databases, it provides a visual way to explore, query, and… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes. Hey HN! We are building Epsilla (https://github.com/epsilla-cloud/vectordb), an open-source, self-hostable vector database for semantic similarity search that specializes in low query latency. When do we need a vector database? For example, GPT-3.5 has a 16k context window limit. If we want to let it answer a question about a 300 page book, we cannot put the whole book content into the context. We have to choose the sections of the book that are most relevant to the question. Vector database is specialized at ranking and picking the most relevant content from a large pool…

Paste in my prompt to Claude Code with an embedded API key for accessing my public readonly SQL+vector database, and you have a state-of-the-art research tool over Hacker News, arXiv, LessWrong, and dozens of other high-quality public commons sites. Claude whips up the monster SQL queries that safely run on my machine, to answer your most nuanced questions. There's also an Alerts functionality, where you can just ask Claude to submit a SQL query as an alert, and you'll be emailed when the ultra nuanced criteria is met (and the output changes). Like I want to know when somebody posts about…

Hey HN, we want to share HelixDB (https://github.com/HelixDB/helix-db/), a project a college friend and I are working on. It’s a new database that natively intertwines graph and vector types, without sacrificing performance. It’s written in Rust and our initial focus is on supporting RAG. Here’s a video runthrough: https://screen.studio/share/szgQu3yq. Why a hybrid? Vector databases are useful for similarity queries, while graph databases are useful for relationship queries. Each stores data in a way that’s best for its main type of query (e.g.…

As a grad student (and an ADHDer), I had trouble doing literature review systematically. To combat this, I made a website that finds similar papers using the meaning of the thing I am looking for. I used MixedBread's [^1] embedding model to generate vectors from the abstracts. I store and search similar vectors using Milvus [^2] and finally use Gradio [^3] to serve the frontend. I update the vector database weekly by pulling the metadata dataset from Kaggle [^4]. To speed up the search process on my free oracle instance, I binarise the embeddings and use Hamming distance as a metric. I would…

This is a vector index I built that supports insertion and k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) querying, optimized for GPUs. It operates entirely in CUDA and can process queries on half a billion vectors in under 200 milliseconds. The codebase is structured as a standalone library with an HTTP API for remote access. It’s intended for high-performance search tasks—think similarity search, AI model retrieval, or reinforcement learning replay buffers. The codebase is located at https://github.com/rodlaf/BinaryGPUIndex.

Hi HN, I built VectorDBZ, a cross-platform desktop app for exploring and analyzing vector databases like Qdrant, Weaviate, Milvus, and ChromaDB. It lets you browse collections, inspect vectors and metadata, run similarity searches, and visualize embeddings without writing custom scripts. GitHub (downloads and issues): https://github.com/vectordbz/vectordbz Feedback welcome. If it’s useful, starring the repo helps keep me motivated. Thanks.

Hi HN, A few of our team members at Airbyte (and Joe, who killed it!) recently played with building our own internal support chat bot, using Airbyte, Langchain, Pinecone and OpenAI, that would answer any questions we ask when developing a new connector on Airbyte. As we prototyped it, we realized that it could be applied for many other use cases and sources of data, so... we created a tutorial that other community members can leverage [http://airbyte.com/tutorials/chat-with-your-data-using-opena...] and the Github repo to run it…

Hey HN - I’m Jeff, co-founder of Chroma. In December of 2022, I was scrolling Twitter in the wee-hours of the morning holding my then-newborn daughter. ChatGPT had launched, and we were all figuring out what this technology was and how to make it useful. Developers were using retrieval to bring their data to the models - and so I DM’d every person who had tweeted about “embeddings” in the entire month of December. (it was only 120 people!) I saw then how AI was going to need to search to all the world’s information to build useful and reliable applications. Anton Troynikov and I started…

Hi HN! We're thrilled to share CozoDB v0.6, a monumental update to our FOSS database, which already unifies relational and graph features. With the addition of vector search, CozoDB becomes an even better companion for LLMs like ChatGPT. This release introduces vector search using HNSW indices within Datalog, enabling seamless integration with powerful features such as ad-hoc joins, recursive Datalog, and classical whole-graph algorithms. This update significantly broadens CozoDB's capabilities. Check out the linked release note for an in-depth look at the new features, comparisons to other…

I have been working on SQL Explorer, an open source, Django-based reporting and query tool for (gulp!) almost ten years. It's a tool that fits just right for me and many others, and I love and use almost every day. Write SQL, share results, do some analysis, get insight. No surprises. A live demo instance is here (no login or anything required): https://demo.sqlexplorer.io/ And here's a fairly unprofessional, but very enthusiastic, video tour: https://sql-explorer.s3.amazonaws.com/Sql+Explorer+5.mp4 The UI is constrained enough that there's very little to learn,…
