We are excited to announce Cedille, the largest language model for French (6b parameters). Demo: https://cedille.ai Language models are general purpose AI systems that are able to solve a range of tasks by simply being prompted for it. It can be used for example to summarize text, do translations, or for idea generation & overcoming writer's block. You may know GPT-3, the humongous model from OpenAI. Cedille is a similar model targeting the French demographic - but smaller, as we don’t yet have $1b in the bank like they do. Although GPT-3 supports multiple languages including…

Hey HN! Halfway through moving to Canada and whilst my conversational French gets me by, I'm absolutely rubbish when someone rattles off phone numbers at full speed (quatre-vingt-dix-neuf anyone?). So I built a virtual pet that thrives on correctly answered number challenges. 20-second drills throughout the day: get them right and Lexie grows, get them wrong and it gets a bit sad (but never dies, this isn't the 90s). Speak, type, or tap your answers. Would love any feedback/bugreports. Or just rant about how the Belgians sensibly say "nonante-neuf" whilst we're stuck with…

We just released a fully computer-animated multivariable calculus course in six languages: English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, and Portuguese. Free and open to everyone. Half the course is live now; the rest is coming very soon. We're an early-stage edtech startup. Our goal: use AI to build high-quality, computer-animated versions of every STEM course in the world, in every language, and bring them together on a platform like Coursera, but built for the AI age, with deep LLM integration. We want that literally. Every course. Every language. This project simply couldn't exist without…

Hey HN, the Common Crawl Foundation is trying to expand the coverage of our crawl to more languages, regions and cultures, and if you speak a language other than English (LOTE) you can help! By validating Language Identification data (LangID or LID): https://dynabench.org/tasks/text-language-identification By contributing urls for our seed crawl: https://github.com/commoncrawl/web-languages We're also organizing a Workshop on Multilingual Data Quality Signals (WMDQS) with MLCommons and EleutherAI where we have a call for papers open…

Hi HN, I built Lengpal, a simple language exchange platform where two people get instantly matched on video to practice their native and target languages. There’s a timer built in so both sides get equal time to speak. I created this because I wanted something beyond passive apps like Duolingo. Something to actually speak with real people without the hassle of scheduling or chat fatigue. Right now we are testing the concept with a waitlist. We’ve collected 77 emails so far from Reddit and IndieHackers. I would love your feedback before launching the MVP. Site:…

Made this app because I was tired of not knowing 50 words/book when I read in English. You can try it on the AppStore searching "Quicky app". For Android user please use the web mobile version at https://quicky.app/. The Desktop version has a shitty responsive design. IMPORTANT NOTE: If you are not French, you will want to tell you are to try the features of the app (sorry it's only in French though) I'd love to hear your feedback.

I'm building a Telegram bot to practice Dutch. GPT-4o-mini kept picking vocabulary words I already knew, so I built a classical NLP pipeline to do it instead. It takes a short text + learner level (A0–B1) and returns the best words to study, using Stanza for parsing and corpus frequency ranks (SUBTLEX-NL, srLex, SUBTLEX-US) for scoring. Wins at A1/A2, loses at A0 where the LLM picks more obvious words. I also tried adding multi-word phrases (ADJ+NOUN, VERB+NOUN, phrasal verbs) backed by NPMI-scored collocation whitelists. Couldn't beat GPT there because it just "knows" which phrases…

I built this because I was frustrated with how messy translation files get as projects scale. Most i18n solutions force you to manage big JSON dictionaries, spread across multiple files, and then manually wire everything into your UI. It quickly becomes hard to keep things organized, especially in component-heavy apps. This approach is component-first i18n: translations live close to the UI they belong to. That makes it easier to keep things organized, avoid duplication, and scale without the usual chaos of string management. It’s lightweight, works with React/Next.js, and is designed…

Hi HN, I build this a few months back, thinking about improving it but wanted to share as is first to see what feedback I can get. I built it to be modular and with a clean understandable codebase in mind so easily extendable. I want to add more components to it maybe... Thanks! Will add link to the repo in a comment now

Easily collect all transcriptions from a YouTube channel to create your own custom GPT (via OpenAI) or querying a large context window (Claude 2.1) The example is “CY GPT” your very own Sichael Miebel and Calton Daldwell in your pocket. I have a backlog of open-source projects, hope this helps!! This is counter intuitive (as I’m posting this) but please respect the creators copyright and use for research purposes only

It is a Llama-v2-13b base model, trained on over 2500 unique datasets (5.24B tokens) spanning categories such as classification, entity resolution, matching, reading comprehension and information extraction. Demo: https://youtu.be/fXj5VYYaoeY Website: https://plusonechinese.com Hey HN, we're Patrick and Thomas and are building an app that uses generative video to teach languages (currently Mandarin only). Background: We think the "Comprehensible Input" theory of language learning has a lot of merit - TL;DR: consume native content that you can understand a high % of and pick everything else up as you go with context. For more detail see https://refold.la/roadmap/ or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Input_hypothesis However, it is quite…
