Hey HN, the is Chris, creator of FireDBG. We’ve been working on this debugger just about a year now. Time travel debugging isn’t a new concept, the new idea here is to use call tree visualisation to help us navigate the debug trace. It supports various Linux distros on x64 and macOS on x64 and M1. It’s only available for Rust right now, but we do want to bring this debugging experience to other programming languages. Please give it a try! Would love to know your thoughts. What’s your anecdote in debugging programs? My stupidity is usually in the form of: after a few hours of debugging, I…

Hello HN! I've recently released and open-sourced a time travel debugging VSCode extension for Python, Javascript & Typescript. https://github.com/dedale-dev/ariana It's born from the pain of spending hours reproducing bugs, struggling to read parallel streams of logging across client/server, and managing print/console.log statements. You can see a short video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2gZv7IOo7s Basically its two parts: One part CLI called `ariana` that you install with npm/pip and run alongside your code's run command. For…

I made this because building UIs in a lexical medium like code is super annoying. I have to pre-render what I’m making in my head, and then jump between the browser and IDE to test. I was inspired by the developer console in chrome and safari since I end up editing css there because it’s ironically more convenient. Hope it’s useful!

Hey! We are presenting CodeTracer - a user-friendly time-traveling debugger designed to support a wide range of programming languages: https://github.com/metacraft-labs/codetracer?tab=readme-ov-f... CodeTracer records the execution of a program into a sharable self-contained trace file. You can load the produced trace files in a GUI environment that allows you to move forward and backward through the execution and to examine the history of all memory locations. They say a picture is worth a thousand words — well, a video is even better! Watch the demo below to see…

This was something I built while trying to look for housing in Toronto that was decently transit-accessible to my office while still cheap. The backend is written in Rust. It parses public GTFS data from transit agencies and performs a simple heuristics-based BFS on the bus lines to calculate how long to reach all points in a city. The frontend uses React and Mapbox GL to render each individual road segment based on how long it takes to reach. This project was a great excuse to learn Rust, deployments, and mapping. The source code is here if you are interested:…

Hi HN, I'm the CEO at https://replay.io. We've been building a time travel debugger for web apps for several years now (previous HN post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28539247) and are combining our tech with AI to automate the debugging process. AIs are really good at writing code but really bad at debugging -- it's amazing to use Claude to prompt an app into existence, and pretty frustrating when that app doesn't work right and Claude is all thumbs fixing the problem. The basic reason for this is a lack of context. People can use devtools to understand…
