MultiDrive▲467Hey HN! I'm the CTO at Atola Technology, and we have launched MultiDrive: a free disk backup/clone/wipe tool that does things differently. After 17 years of work with drives, I got tired of seeing simple disk operations locked behind paywalls. Macrium killed their free version, EaseUS hides cloning in paid tiers, and so on and so forth. Another reason is that all the existing solutions are overly complicated. It must be simple enough for my mum to start erasing a USB stick or making a full drive backup. All in all, we thought the community deserved better. What makes MultiDrive…

How often do you screw up the system so much you have to reformat the disk (without losing data) to fix it? Well, sometimes I do, and sometimes I can't be bothered to burn a live ISO onto a USB stick. There's initramfs, but it's hardly a pleasant environment, with network configuration and all. My go-to solution has typically been to create a chroot with busybox and a few utilities in /tmp, chroot into it, and then kill services that use the solid drive so that I can unmount it. That's an error-prone process, and sometimes systemd itself uses disk, so you can't unmount the drive despite…

In the deep mists of time (circa 2012), I was playing with the Go standard library, and saw how easy it was to stand up a webserver that let you navigate a remote file system, and I thought it was pretty neat. I took a look at my shell history and a frequent pattern of commands was "cd, ls, cd, ls, ...". And I thought "I love my keyboard, but you know, point and click might be nice in this context." And then I thought, "It'd be even cooler if you could run commands there." Skip forward several years, a few earlier implementations, a name change, and now there's Hucksh(ell), a bash-like shell…
