Hello HN! I’m excited to share this open-source community mashup showing the power and possibility of combining 3D Gaussian splat scans with traditional mesh-based 3D tiles maps in the browser. As you've probably seen on HN a bunch lately, Gaussian splats are a new method to allow custom 3D scans of scenes and objects [1] and Google Maps 3D Tiles API are the same 3D buildings and street views your familiar with in Google Earth or Google Maps, and recently they’ve been made available for inclusion in web apps. Combining splats + 3d map mixes highly detailed real-world custom micro-scans with…

Hey HN, As noted in a previous comment posted on the "Paris Will Become ‘100% Cyclable’" thread [0], I've been contributing to a project (as a volunteer backend developer) to try to accelerate urban change around pedestrian/cyclable/car-free streets. It's "change.org for urban transformation". It started with a Twitter account posting Dall-E-ified versions of streets [1] which picked up steam in the press [2]. And now, we're live with our own site! Happy to answers questions, and other folks from the project might chime in as well. [0]…

After being frustrated with the budget and learning curve requirements of the big names in the Virtual Production field, I decided to create my own all-in-one platform designed with beginners and less-technical folk in mind. It takes complicated tasks in other engines (tracking, compositing, floor plans, etc.) and makes them two-click solutions. And, with the free companion mobile app, you can track cameras, scan your sets, and (coming soon) do full body motion capture! There's a ton more features that I'm super proud of, and I'm open to any and all feedback! Thanks!

One of my first projects after discovering the power of coding was to build an event aggregator in my city. The first version was very basic, built in python’s Tkinter. After moving to a bigger city where everything was new, the problem became a bit different. I didn’t know where all the venues were at, so I had this idea to put various events on the map. Since I was mostly interested in parties at that time we’ve also connected the events to Soundcloud API. That version didn’t live long. When I got older parties were not in my interest anymore. So when my companion showed me the vast amount…

Hi HN, I’m one of the devs behind StarDesk, a P2P-first remote desktop we’ve been building for ~1 year. We started this partly out of frustration: some popular RDP tools haven’t seen meaningful updates in a long time, and long-standing issues are often left unaddressed. As devs, we really dislike software that stagnates once it “works well enough”. StarDesk is our attempt to do it differently. What we focus on: -P2P by default (relay as fallback) -Low RTT + low jitter > chasing max bitrate -Encoder / input path tuned for real-time interaction -Modern E2EE (TLS/DTLS) UX-wise, setup…

Hey everyone! Excited to share Scene with you! We spent hours investigating the intricacies of how people create websites. We focussed primarily on collaboration: what it looks like when teammates with different areas of expertise work together to build a site. We did a deep dive into how designers and marketers work today, and how they envision working in the future. AI will be a big part of that future. But AI is not here to replace the web design process. We know designers don't fully trust creations made entirely by AI—and why should they? Instead, AI is here to lend a helping hand. It…

Resubmitting text to 3d simulation on a map because during the last submission, I quickly reached my quota on Google's photorealistic 3d map tiles, leaving many confused. You can simulate anything on a map in 3d, and it recreates historical events pretty well. It also now includes a timeline of events for each simulation. The goal is to create a simulator that can meaningfully predict the past -- and future events. Now I have an increased daily quota and in case it's reached, a system for providing your own api key. Glad for feedback. I built the frontend with threejs, the atmospheric fx…

I built AI Place, a vLLM-controlled pixel canvas inspired by r/place. Instead of users placing pixels, an LLM paints the grid continuously and you can watch it evolve live. The theme rotates daily. Currently, the canvas is scored using CLIP ViT-B/32 against a prompt (e.g., Pixelart of ${theme}). The highest-scoring snapshot is saved to the archive at the end of each day. The agents work in a simple loop: Input: Theme + image of current canvas Output: Python code to update specific pixel coordinates + One word description Tech: Next.js, SSE realtime updates, NVIDIA NIM (Mistral…

Hi, I'm Vaibhav, creator of Backroad. Over the course of building several web apps with Node.JS over the years, a major pain point always was having to make tons of decisions regarding framework choices, styling libraries, choosing form elements, handling file uploads etc. So I built a Streamlit like tool which makes the whole process simpler. You can check it out here: https://backroad.sudomakes.art/ With time and experience I have realised that more than 80% of use cases can be achieved using a basic set of inputs and components. With Backroad, you can focus on your core…

Disclaimer: this is vibe-coded — ( what i see in the exported html 3. It helps me help our designer to produce an actual "resizable" figma, so that they finally understand the pain of "ok it works when you click play on the iphone 17 frame you put, but what about an iphone12 ?" (I was always able to say that, but before I wasn't able to point out what was wrong, now I can) How it works: When you open a Figma file in the browser, the editor loads the entire scenegraph via WebSocket as Kiwi-encoded binary frames. This tool captures those frames via Chrome DevTools Protocol, decodes the binary…

Hey HN! I wanted to know what was going on in cities/towns where my friends live, so I built Needle. It uses an LLM + Open Street map to best estimate general locations of stories posted in the past day, and pin them on the map. For stories involving multiple places, I also wanted to show the relation between them. It's still a little janky, and is limited to mostly Canadian sources of news at the moment, but I'm planning on expanding it shortly, as I'm keen to see what international sources are writing about my home city. Let me know if you have any questions/feedback!

Im working on a mind mapping app that would allow for integration of gamification features and be nicer and easier to remember. I was missing more advanced graphics from apps and being able to treat it as my note taking and learning tool. i.e. how (and why?) should I remember a mind map if it looks the same like all other maps and all i can do is pick couple of shapes and dashed/dotted lines? this simply doesnt work with my brain so i decided to create something better :) map on page is a preview of this, but im curious about the quiz, typing games and cheatsheet, would love some…

Hi Everyone! I built this 3D desktop environment, CLI, and visualizer tool. It's in very early stages and has many updates in the pipeline. It is written in UE BP, C++, Python, and some React, Javascript, HTML, and CSS. The included videos describe plans for new features and major updates. I would appreciate any feedback on it!
