Products that do what SelfDB – Ditch Supabase and Firebase Lock-In, Self-Host Simply does
Hey HN! We're a small team of developers who, like many of you, love the power and convenience of Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) platforms. However, we've also felt the sting of vendor lock-in, wrestled with the complexities of self-hosting feature-rich open-source alternatives, and worried about unpredictable costs or the sudden disappearance of free tiers that many indie devs and small projects rely on. We believe developers deserve more control and simplicity without sacrificing functionality. After countless hours spent navigating these challenges, we decided to build the solution we wished…

Hey there HN! We’re Joe and Stopa, and today we’re open sourcing InstantDB, a client-side database that makes it easy to build real-time and collaborative apps like Notion and Figma. Building modern apps these days involves a lot of schleps. For a basic CRUD app you need to spin up servers, wire up endpoints, integrate auth, add permissions, and then marshal data from the backend to the frontend and back again. If you want to deliver a buttery smooth user experience, you’ll need to add optimistic updates and rollbacks. We do these steps over and over for every feature we build, which can…

Hey HN! Happy to finally launch Stack. We made it because we like to put apps into production quickly, and authentication & user management was taking up way too much time. We have components like and that automatically adapt to whatever theme & design system you're using. Check the blog post to see the example with Radix UI and Joy UI. Also, there's an admin dashboard for monitoring and editing accounts. Stack is 100% AGPL/MIT-licensed, so you can self-host it. Cheers!

Hey HN, We've been experimenting with a real-time, version-controlled NoDB for Deno & React called GoatDB. The idea is to remove backend complexity while keeping apps fast, offline-resilient, and easy to self-host. Runs on the client – No backend required, incremental queries keep things efficient. Self-hosted & lightweight – Deploy a single executable, no server stack needed. Offline-first & resilient – Clients work independently & can restore state after server outages. Edge-native & fast – Real-time sync happens locally with minimal overhead. Why We Built It: We needed something that’s…

Hi HN, I'm Mohammed, a technical founder who loves shipping and giving back to the community. I'm open-sourcing the full-stack engine that powers my B2B product, apflow.co. What it is: A production B2B starter with a Go backend and Next.js frontend. Both are fully Dockerized with separate containers. No Vercel. No Supabase. Deploy the whole thing on a $6 VPS, or split frontend and backend across different providers. You own the infrastructure. The problem I was solving: Every SaaS starter I evaluated had the same issue: they locked me into someone else's platform. Vercel for hosting.…

I built bknd because I was tired of stitching together auth, file storage, and database APIs every time I started a new project. Existing solutions were either too hard to extend, too basic, or required a separate deployment. bknd runs directly inside your frontend app — no separate backend required. It works with Next.js, Remix, Astro, React Router. It also runs standalone on Cloudflare Workers, AWS Lambda, Bun, or Node. It supports Postgres, LibSQL (Turso), D1, SQLite and has adapter-based storage. You get instant APIs, multi-strategy auth, media handling and a built-in Admin UI. Curious…

I built this tool about a year ago to get really good at the supabase ecosystem. We were trying to raise money on the idea, but that didn't occur, so I wanted to open-source it, as I would love to give back to the commmunity. It allows you to invite friends and family to be helpers for child-care, meals, and transportation, and then you can create an event and they will get auto-invited to it and can choose to support you. It is using vue on the frontend and then supabase on the backend for auth, database, realtime, storage, and edge functions. Anyway, I hope someone finds it useful, there…

Hi HN — we've built a testing framework for Supabase that spins up fast, isolated Postgres databases for each test case. It’s designed to make RLS policies easy to validate with real database state, without global test fixtures or mock auth. Features: - Instant isolated Postgres DBs per test - Automatic rollback after each test - RLS-native testing with `.setContext()` for auth simulation - Flexible seeding (SQL, CSV, JSON, JS) - Works with Jest, Mocha, and any async test runner - CI-friendly (runs cleanly in GitHub Actions) We also published example projects and a free set of tutorials:…
