I built a mindmap-based discussion platform, but what made the project truly interesting was not the UI — it was building the backend in Common Lisp. Inspired by Paul Graham and his book The Hacker and the Painter, I wanted to experience what it feels like to design a system in a language built for abstraction rather than convention. Instead of relying on a large framework, I combined small libraries and built a minimal internal structure myself.

Hey HN - my name is Tim and I created Slatebox. Slatebox is a visualization collaboration platform that lets you create editable mind-maps, diagrams, SWOT Analyses (w 100s of other templates) and more -- all based on natural language through AI. It's like Miro but with AI superpowers. Would love to know what you think. Im working on a mind mapping app that would allow for integration of gamification features and be nicer and easier to remember. I was missing more advanced graphics from apps and being able to treat it as my note taking and learning tool. i.e. how (and why?) should I remember a mind map if it looks the same like all other maps and all i can do is pick couple of shapes and dashed/dotted lines? this simply doesnt work with my brain so i decided to create something better :) map on page is a preview of this, but im curious about the quiz, typing games and cheatsheet, would love some…

Hi HN! I kept hearing about Lisp and why it was special but didn't have a great place to start. I wanted something self-contained that helped me develop intuition rather than fluency. My hope is this is helpful for casual programmers, professionals from other fields who interact with code, or engineers who haven't had much exposure to interpreters or compilers.
