24 alternatives to Sourcebot – Self-hosted Perplexity for your codebase
Hi HN, We’re Brendan and Michael, the creators of Sourcebot (https://www.sourcebot.dev/), a self-hosted code understanding tool for large codebases. We originally launched on HN 9 months ago with code search (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41711032), and we’re excited to share our newest feature: Ask Sourcebot. Ask Sourcebot is an agentic search tool that lets you ask complex questions about your entire codebase in natural language, and returns a structured response with inline citations back to your code. Hi HN, We’re Brendan and Michael, the creators of Sourcebot (https://github.com/sourcebot-dev/sourcebot). Sourcebot is an open-source code search tool that allows you to quickly search across many large codebases. Check out our demo video here: https://youtu.be/mrIFYSB_1F4, or try it for yourself on our demo site here: https://demo.sourcebot.dev While at prior roles, we’ve both felt the pain of searching across hundreds of multi-million line codebases. Using local tools like grep were ill-suited since you often only had a handful of codebases…

Hey HN! I'm one of the cofounders of Sourcebot, an open source alternative to Sourcegraph. Sourcebot lets you index thousands of repos across multiple platforms (GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket), and gives you a powerful interface to search across them. You can learn more in our original HN launch post: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41711032 We just added an AI code review agent that reviews your PRs and automatically detects issues that a human reviewer may have missed. We've been using an AI code review agent for a few weeks now, and it regularly catches issues that we…

Hello everyone. I've been working on this experimental editor called Huzzah. I've been working almost exclusively with coding agents since January of this year, and over the past few months I began to feel utterly exhausted by them. They're great, but I'm finding it more and more tedious to write full sentences for every change I want. Not only that, but it seems there's a complexity limit for codebases - beyond a certain point the agent begins confusing itself. I'd like to go back to writing code, but I don't want to go all the way back to fully manual coding. So I've come up with this…

Hey HN! We (Stephan and Thomas) recently open-sourced Semble. We kept running into the same problem while using Claude Code on large codebases: when the agent can't find something directly, it falls back to grep, reading full files or launching subagents. This uses a lot of tokens, and often still misses the relevant code. There are existing tools for this, but they were either too slow to index on demand, needed API keys, or had poor retrieval quality. Semble is our solution for this. It combines static Model2Vec embeddings (using our latest static model: potion-code-16M) with BM25, fused…

Hi HN — we’re John and Vish! We built WhyBot, a tool to help you deeply explore a question or topic. You ask a question, and WhyBot responds by building an ever-expanding knowledge graph. It does this by recursively generating answers and follow-up questions. You can change its persona to change the flavor of the generations (try toddler mode!). We originally built this for the AngelList Agent Hackathon (https://twitter.com/AqeelMeetsWorld/status/16502799744050421...) and got a lot of interest from folks asking to play around with it. So we thought it’d be fun to…

We’ve trained a generative AI model to browse the web and answer questions/retrieve code snippets directly. Unlike ChatGPT, it has access to primary sources and is able to cite them when you hover over an answer (click on the text to go to the source being cited). We also show regular Bing results side-by-side with our AI answer. The model is an 11-billion parameter T5-derivative that has been fine-tuned on feedback given on hundreds of thousands of searches done (anonymously) on our platform. Giving the model web access lessens its burden to need to store a snapshot of human knowledge…

Hello HN, I’m Kamil. The past months have been filled with news about ChatGPT, Bard, etc. Thankfully, there are some heroic attempts to bring that power to the users. I wanted to contribute to that effort with my side project, an extension for Chrome: it makes searching the history by meaning – instead of the exact words – possible. This is only a proof of concept, building on the excellent transformers.js[0], and running entirely in the browser. My goal here is to explore the possibilities unlocked by a client-side AI. I would love to have your feedback, to know which direction that project…

I've been exploring the (not so=) amazing potential of AI in coding and have compiled a list of tools. From AI-powered IDEs to code generators, this resource is my contribution to the community. I'm still on the fence about including txt2sql projects, as their functionality seems too basic to me. And I'm personally maintaining this, so your feedback is wellcome.

Codebased combines Tree Sitter for code awareness (find functions, data structures, constants, etc. not just lines of code), full-text search using SQLite, and semantic search using OpenAI embeddings + FAISS. Despite being implemented in Python, supporting semantic search, making multiple API calls for embedding and re-ranking, it is faster than ripgrep for runng searches against the Linux kernel (takes ~1 second vs. ~2 seconds, obviously depends on system, temperature, time of day, tidal forces, etc.) Up next: - A Perplexity-like agent for interpreting results, making multiple follow-up…

Hi HN, I’m the founder of a SaaS platform called CommandBar (YC S20). We’ve been mucking around with AI-related side quests for a while, but recently got excited enough about one to test it with some customers. Results were surprisingly good so we decided to launch it. HelpHub is AI chat + semantic search for any website or web app. You can add source content in 3 ways: -Crawling any public site via a URL (e.g. your marketing site or blog) -Syncing with a CMS (like Zendesk or Intercom) -Add content manually The chatbot is then “trained” on that content and will answer question’s based on…

I built this because I got tired of watching Claude Code read through massive files just to find a few functions. Sourcerer lets AI agents search code semantically and grab exactly the code chunks they need instead of burning tokens on whole files. It uses tree-sitter to parse your codebase and creates a searchable index. So instead of "read auth.py (538 lines)", an agent can search for "user authentication logic" and get back just the relevant functions.
