I got fed up with the news reader apps out there so I decided to make my own. Its a simple concept where it tracks all your favorite news sources for new posts and the social shares it received. Then it ranks it HN/Reddit style using social shares as upvotes. It's not meant to be alternative to HN, just a focused way to track your favorite sources. Hi HN. I had faced an issue where I wanted to know how a place I was travelling to looked like. Like everyone else I looked at google maps and snap chat too. But Google streetview images were usually old and snapchat snaps lacked control. So I built GeoQuests for anyone who wants to know what’s going on on Earth. You drop a quest at a real location. People see it on the map, go there, and complete it by taking a photo when they’re close enough. I was inspired by the notification summaries on iOS 18 and really liked the idea of AI giving you a quick preview of the content before going to the content. I applied that to HN and built a Chrome extension that summarizes the sentiment and content of HN comments and previews it right next to the stories on the homepage. Makes it so much easier to decide whether I want to delve into the HN comments of a story. It gave me a chance to play with Gemini 1.5 Flash-8B which has been great. Super fast, super cheap, huge context and does a great john on basic tasks like summarizing comment threads.…
