Hello, HN! I'm Vidu, a fullstack dev with extensive past experience in image and video coding. I wrote Taucoder, an image encoding service, in my spare time for fun and possibly some profit? hey there hn! thought you would appreciate my brand new file format - i've spent over 40 minutes creating this standard. it's really hard trying to get your ideas shown to standards boards etc but i think with the great community here we can help get bioif support into all major browsers :) the spec is available over at the website, as is a reference implementation. it already has higher usage than jpeg-xl. - best

Hi, so over the weekend I built a free to use service to compress one or more images using MozJEPG encoding enabled via WASM. It's a static site, all the processing happens on the client side, no file uploads or sign-ups needed! Why? The existing services are either filled with ads or require you to sign-up / pay. would greatly appreciate any feedback! TIA!

LiveCoder is a fun tool I built almost a year ago to simulate live coding Frontend technologies for my presentations. You actually don't have to live-code, but just prepare beforehand the program, snippets of HTML, CSS and Javascript and you feed the tool with it, so you can just focus on explaining what's being coded. I'd like to share a little toy project of mine, a really simple image codec that can do lossy to full lossless image compression with complete scalability at a byte level granularity - you can compress an image just once, even fully losslessly if needed, and then get any lossy version possible by simply stopping decompression at any offset in the compressed data. Read an article yesterday about the H.264 codec increasing their licensing fee by an astronomical amount. AvifHash leverages the power of AVIF to create image placeholders that are both compact and efficient. This Proof of Concept shows promising results: at 27 characters, AvifHash outperforms BlurHash https://blurha.sh/ (using 4x3 components) in quality and detail retention. At a similar quality, BlurHash needs 54 (5x5) to 76 characters (6x6 components). Given that AVIF decoding is done by the web engine, AvifHash is very small: the entire demo page (including parsing and re-hydration code) is only 2.3 kB gzipped.

Hello Hacker News photographers! Yes, this is essentially my take on photo colling and management, similar to the features that Lightroom and Darktable already have. Because I shoot in JPEG+RAW, my workflow looks like me going through my JPEG images and then eliminating the JPEGs I don't like afterwards in addition to their corresponding RAWs. At least on my old MacBook, the JPEGs were faster to load than the RAW photos (probably a combination of CR2, the file my EOS 40D, not having embedded JPEG previews and my buggy macOS version).
