Hey HN, Henry from Cactus here! We previously released Cactus Needle, a 14MB agentic LLM for tool call, device use, and structured extraction for phones, wearables, smart homes, small robots and microcontrollers. We got really great feedback here, and have now incorporated the suggestions to release Needle 2. The whole model is a single 14MB binary that runs a full session in 28MB of RAM; 45m parameters at 2bit compression. Needle hits 500 tokens/sec decode speed on a Raspberry Pi 5, sits between 400-1,500 tokens/sec on VR devices like Meta Quest 3S and Apple Vision Pro, and ranges…

Wow, half a year has passed since my last blog. I have to admit, during this period I was a bit disconnected from the physical AI world. I transitioned to a different team at work after their two data scientists were reassigned to other teams, and I had to ramp up quickly to take over…

I've made an ARM based single-board computer that runs Android and Linux, and has the same size as the Raspberry Pi 3! Why? I was bored during my 2-week high-school vacation and wanted to improve my skills, while adding a bit to the open-source community :P These were the specs I ended up with: - H3 SoC - Quad-Core Cortex-A7 ARM CPU @ 1.3GHz - Mali400 MP2 GPU @ 600MHz - 512MiB of DDR3 RAM (Can be upgraded to 1GiB) - WiFi, Bluetooth & Ethernet PHY - HDMI display port - 1080p resolution - 5x USB Slots: 2x USB-A, 1x USB-C Host, 1x USB-C Host & OTG, 1x USB-C PD for power (Negotiating up to 25W.…

While cleaning out some old cartons last weekend, I found my old Raspberry Pi Model B+. It is the first iteration of the Pi. It has a 700MHz ARM CPU and 512MB of RAM. It uses a micro-SD card for non-volatile storage. So as you can see, it is quite a capable little computer, and you can power it off

The Emotion Engine has 32 MB of RAM total, so the trick is streaming weights from CD-ROM one matrix at a time during the forward pass — only activations, KV cache and embeddings live in RAM. This means models bigger than the RAM can still run, they just read more from disc. Had to build a custom quantized format (PSNT), hack endianness, write a tokenizer pipeline, and most of the PS2 SDK from scratch (releasing that separately). The model itself is also custom — a 10M param Llama-style architecture I trained specifically for this. And it works. On real hardware.

Democratisation of local AI is key. I've been working on pushing the limits of commercial hardware, squeezing any extra bit possible. My Scientific Agentic AI hareness helped me to reallocate every single bit of it. I rewrote the Kernel, I went down the CUDA rabbit hole until I have been able to explain any bit and any ms of computational power involved in the process pushing the Qwen 30B-A3B from 8 tok7s to 19 tok/s with llama.cpp up to 22.2 tok/s with my project and 109 tok/s on not novel content and speeding up the prefill by 5-9X

runNburn is an Apache-2.0 Rust inference engine for quantized GGUF models that are too big for your fast memory. The core idea: weights stay file-backed (mmap), host residency stays under an explicit byte budget (--ram-budget), and GPU caches are sized from detected free/total VRAM — never from device-name presets. There is no conversion step, no sidecar cache files, no silent requantization. The GGUF on disk is the single source of truth. The result that made me want to post this: Tencent's Hy3 (295B total / 21B active sparse MoE, a single 97.8 GiB Q2_K GGUF) runs on my desktop…

I wanted to know how fast a 26B mixture-of-experts model could run on a desktop CPU with no GPU. Got ~40 tok/s single-stream (lossless) and ~124 batched. The surprising part was the byte budget: for this model you compress the output head (32% of per-token bytes), not the experts (16%). The writeup has the bandwidth roofline and the dead-ends; the repo has the reproducible recipe. Happy to answer questions. Repo: https://github.com/arun-prasath2005/gemma4-cpu-moe

MicroPython (lexer, compiler and VM) on the SNES: 3.58 MHz 65816, 56 KB Python heap, 16-bit int. The REPL runs right inside the post via EmulatorJS and also works on real hardware via flashcart. I did this as a benchmark for Claude Fable. When the export ban hit, switching to Opus got the project stuck for three weeks; Fable came back and found the real bug in ninety minutes. Along the way: 23 compiler bugs and 4 MicroPython bugs, each root-caused with a minimal reproducer and filed upstream. If you run it on real hardware, I want a picture!

"Hi Hacker News, I’ve always found Docker to be overkill for simple Python deployments. It's heavy, complex for non-tech users, and often results in 500MB+ images for a 10KB script. That’s why I built Pygantry. It’s a minimalist 'container' engine based on Python venv but made portable and relocatable. Key features: Lightweight: A full 'shipped' app is usually < 20MB. Zero-Config: No daemon, no root, no Dockerfile complexity. Portable: Build once, zip it, and run it anywhere with a Python interpreter. Founder friendly: Built-in licensing and stealth modes for those building a business. I…

Over the last few weeks, I worked on a set of tools which enables (1) a modern workflow to build customized images for Raspberry Pi, (2) robust over-the-air updates with rollback support of the entire system, including firmware files, and (3) managed state which is preserved across reboots and updates. The goal is to have a reliable platform for creating Raspberry Pi-based products. The initial motivation for the project came from one of our customers who uses Raspberry Pi to control test benches for pedelecs. The entire project is open-source. Feel free to check it out and give it a try.…
