Products that do what This one line of code will make HN usable on mobile devices does
Since the HN devs seem to be in dev-mode, I thought I'd put in one more little request. :) This one line of code, added to the head of HN's html, will make the site actually usable on mobile devices: Here are the before and after pics of the front page: http://imgur.com/rMYfqwN,mwPDMvB#0

Hey HN! Just for fun, I built an interactive Hacker News Simulator. You can submit text posts and links, just like the real HN. But on HN Simulator, all of the comments are generated by LLMs + generate instantly. The best way to use it (IMHO) is to submit a text post or a curl-able URL here: https://news.ysimulator.run/submit. You don't need an account to post. When you do that, various prompts will be built from a library of commenter archetypes, moods, and shapes. The AI commenters will actually respond to your text post and/or submitted link. I really wanted it to feel…

Hi, I have published a mobile app to have coffee chat with HN users. There was already a guy who made a website for this, but I wanted to do it in mobile to practice WebRTC(technology behind the audio chat) and have some fun. I haven't spent too much time in terms of the general functionality as a HN client but can upgrade it if there are enough users enjoying the app. You can download the apps via the links below; IOS: https://apps.apple.com/tr/app/betternews-coffee-chat/id65047... Android: As you might have known, Android requires the app to be tested in a…

I built this last year but never posted it anywhere, but now with Reddit hiatus it seems like the right time to give it a shot. The main goal of zsync is to foster high quality content and discussion. That's it. If it can't accomplish that, then to me it is a failure. I watched Reddit go from having high quality discussion in 2008-9 to devolving into the PC meme dumpster it is today [1]. HN still has the highest discussion quality of any "forum" I know of, but (1) it can sometimes randomly be very hostile/toxic to new tech, the most glaring example being crypto. (2) HN is basically a…

Hey HN folks, I built a simple, minimal and 'swipe'able HN interface to glance through HN posts on mobile. It is a PWA, so feel free to install and use it. Any feedback is welcome! Cheers!

Inspired by WikiTok (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42936723) After making HN paradise: https://meet.hn I had to make https://hnhell.com Fully created with v0.dev: wanted to make the joke but didn't have time for it. Thanks v0! It's even better as you will probably enjoy some very cursed errors/problems, which is expected in hell.

Any suggestions are appreciated, stack utilizes Gluestack UI ,Expo, React Native, and Cloudflare Pages. There is a known bug via touch scroll ability on Android, external keyboard's spacebar or mouse works correctly though, currently. If you know about a solution, let me know. Please note, this is just a prototype, it still has a lot of features to be included. I'd like to learn more about how people use HN and how Hacked could help, where other HN clients failed.

I wanted to see how difficult it would be to build a web app using a sub-$300 android smartphone. Decided to build a fun predictions website where you could bet virtual (not real) money on predictions made by others, and also make predictions of your own. Building it turned out to be considerably easier and more fun than I anticipated. Primary tools used were: # QuickEdit as the mobile code editor (Note: the free version of the QuickEdit app is riddled with ads, it shows an advert each time you close a tab, but it unfortunately had the best UI of the 3 or so Android code editors I tested.…

I thought building something that I would use while learning iOS SDK was a good idea so I built HN Browser. https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hn-browser/id578535095?ls=1&mt=8 HN Browser is a simple app which lets you to read articles and comments on Hacker News. (no voting and writing comment yet) For the logo, I reached out to Joel Glovier(http://joelglovier.com) for his previous work on Hacker News logo(http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4731140) and he kindly granted the use of his work. It was really fun experience to collaborate and build a mobile app using iOS SDK. (although…

http://www.hnshowcase.com Moses (nnythm) and I browse Hacker News daily. Show HN posts are some of our favorite parts of HN. We wanted to create a way to browse Show HN articles, even those that might not quite make it to the front page. We created http://www.hnshowcase.com last weekend to make discovering projects posted on HN easier. It searches all "Show HN" posts and generates a thumbnail view for each of them. You can sort by submission date, points, and number of comments, and navigate with left/right or j/k keys. We used the following technologies: HN Search API, Pyramid web…

Hi, i was wondering what the HN community thinks of this email tone check application? Do you think this can be done better with open-source? Disclaimer: I am neither a founder or an employee at the company. Just someone who had a similar idea.

Why another android HN app? I simply wasn't happy with the current solutions, I wanted something simple that I can read the news from the front page. The goal on this app is to improve the readability and ease the browsing of the links. Also readability.com web services are used like alternative for the external links. Here some screenshots: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2111778/HN-Front-Page-Reader1.jpg https://dl.dropbox.com/u/2111778/HN-Front-Page-Reader2.jpg You can download this app for free here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vladocar.hn Technical stuff: HTML, CSS,…

Hello everyone!, this is a app I have being working on recently. I know there are number of HN readers on android. But couldn't find a one suitable for daily use. So I started developing this app. News articles, comments open in default browser of the device. Click on title of the item to open the article and anywhere else to open comments. Pull down to refresh. Swipe left and right to change the tabs. This is only the first phase of application. Lot of functions yet to be implement (you can read more in Google play listing). Before developing further I would love to have some feedback. BTW…

Hi HN, I figured there are a lot of HN users on here who have a lifetime's worth of valuable tips & advice that they could share with fellow HN users, and that would be very helpful to the rest of us. So I decided to spend a couple of days creating a micro-site where HNers with valuable tips & advice to share, can share those personal-experience derived advice with those of us who would appreciate & benefit from said advice. Link to site: https://yoomter.com Enjoy!

HN is all about the rich discussions. We wanted to take the HN experience one step further - to bring the familiar keyboard-first navigation, find interesting viewpoints in the threads and get a gist of long threads so that we can decide which rabbit holes to explore. So we built HN Companion a year ago, and have been refining it ever since. Try it: https://app.hncompanion.com or available as an extension for Firefox / Chrome: [0]. Most AI summarization strips the voices from conversations by flattening threads into a wall of text. This kills the joy of reading HN discussions.…

Yesterday I decided I wanted to experiment with different ways of reading HN. After considering a few options, I settled on a Mac app and spent a couple of hours planning/sketching on paper. This morning I fired up Xcode and spent 4 hours hacking away and I must say I'm liking how it's looking. Since the project is in its very early stages, I though that it could be a very good time to get some feedback. I've posted a few screenshots at http://imgur.com/a/rCbVN and uploaded a binary at http://abra.rm-fr.net/~fiam/HackerNews.zip If you have some free time, give a try and let me know what you…

Since I got an iPad I was looking for a better Hacker News reading experience than the one you can get using the web version. On the iPhone I use the ihackernews.com web app (and soon going to try news.yc). It's decent for the iPhone, but it doesn't scale good on the iPad. To my surprise, when I checked there was no decent iPad app for HN (i.e. lacking ability to comment or vote, no readability support and more). I anyway wanted to give a try to iPad development, and was looking for an interesting project to work on. Making HN reader app seemed as a good candidate. Over the last weekend I…
