Products that do what TinyDOCX – Word/ODT library (14x smaller than docx) does

After posting tinypdf here, someone opened an issue asking for Word/OpenOffice support. I understand - sometimes you need an editable document, not a PDF. I didn't want to extend the library itself, so I built tinydocx: <1K lines of TypeScript, zero dependencies, 7.7KB minified+gzipped. The popular docx package is 108KB with 5 dependencies. What's included: - Text formatting (bold/italic/underline/strikethrough, colors, custom fonts) - Headings (H1-H6) - Tables with borders and column widths - Bullet and numbered lists (with nesting) - Images (PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP) -…

Hello HN! I've been playing a lot with https://hyperscript.org/ recently (not to be confused with the other hyperhype hyperscript). I threw together a quick Wordle clone in an evening to see what it would look like using this language. The main functionality that is missing is checking for invalid words. The word dictionary is also very small, so it's very easy. The goal here wasn't really to create a good version of Wordle, it was to build 80% of Wordle in a different language to see what it looks like. Turns out, it looks pretty good! Stuff like using CSS rule precedence to…

We're building version control software for Microsoft Office documents that works as well as Git and GitHub do for code. Today, we’re releasing the first component, Draftable for Word, an Office add-in that lets you generate side-by-side diffs, and makes it way less painful to work with Track Changes. Our diffs are designed to look right to humans — instead of machines — showing changes as they might actually have been made by an editor. We'd love to hear your feedback. We’d also love to fix what you find painful about authoring and collaborating on Microsoft Office documents, so get in…

React-print-pdf is a new open-source library that simplifies PDF creation with React. You can design your PDFs like a website, integrate data from your database to your documents, and reuse community components and templates or build your own. Created by three friends who were frustrated by existing solutions and wanted to make PDF creation easier for everyone. Now it’s yours. What are your thoughts on it ?!

Hi HN, I’ve been experimenting with how much file conversion can realistically be pushed into the browser. Last year I tried compiling LibreOffice headless to WASM. The smallest build I could get was ~150MB — far too large just to convert a DOCX to PDF. That’s when I shifted to a hybrid approach. Today ~90% of conversions run client-side using WASM (FFmpeg, PDF/image tooling, spreadsheets, etc.). The heavier edge cases fall back to a small server pipeline (LibreOffice, Pandoc, Poppler). The main challenges weren’t the libraries themselves, but: browser memory ceilings handling large…

Hi HN, I've just launched DocFlex, an offline macOS app that converts Markdown documents into over 30 formats like PDF, HTML, EPUB, LaTeX, and more. Why I built it: As someone who frequently works with Markdown, I found it cumbersome to convert documents into different formats, especially when dealing with multiple files. Online converters weren't ideal due to privacy concerns and the need for an internet connection. So, I created DocFlex to make the process seamless and entirely offline. Key Features: 100% Offline: All conversions happen locally on your machine. Your documents are never…

hey there hn! thought you would appreciate my brand new file format - i've spent over 40 minutes creating this standard. it's really hard trying to get your ideas shown to standards boards etc but i think with the great community here we can help get bioif support into all major browsers :) the spec is available over at the website, as is a reference implementation. it already has higher usage than jpeg-xl. - best

Hi there, this post is introducing AutoDocument, a free and open-source document generating web app that connects spreadsheets, databases and user forms into documents such as Microsoft Word and PDFs. It's based on fantastic open sources libraries like https://github.com/elapouya/python-docx-template and headless LibreOffice. Mail Merge is a pain because it: - Only converts from Excel to Word - Uses special field objects in the Word document - Requires a Microsoft Office License - Has limited templating options AutoDocument is a free and easily installable web app that…

Hi HN, I built a collection of 40+ PDF tools using Kimi k2.5 (with about $50 worth of credits) and a lot of “vibe coding”. The site: https://pdfuck.com (almost forgot I owned this domain ) What it does: 40+ PDF-related tools Completely free No downloads, everything runs in the browser All processing is done locally in your browser for better privacy It’s deployed on Cloudflare, so the running cost is basically close to zero. This started as a small experiment and slowly grew into a fairly complete PDF toolbox. I’d really appreciate feedback on performance, UX, and what tools you…

Hi everyone, the other day I was here cause I thought I came up with a neat way of creating HTML via JavaScript [1] - After some iterations, I'm quite content with the code I wrote. Since I intend to use this in my personal projects, I thought others might as well. 1 - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41451559
