Hello, HN! Figure is a little side project I’ve been working on. Someone described it as Bejeweled meets Wordle. I built the puzzle interface and website in Next.js and React, which was a first for me and overall a great learning experience. The daily puzzle data is queued up in a PostgreSQL table. Another table stores anonymous solve stats. Once a day, a cron job hits a serverless API that promotes the next puzzle as “live” and prompts Next.js to update the prebaked static site with the new data. The game state is managed with Redux and your stats are persisted to localStorage. Framer…

As a fan of dense New York Times-style crosswords, I challenged myself to create topic-specific puzzles. It turns out that generating crosswords and efficiently placing words is a non-trivial computational problem. I started the project, "Joystick Jargon" combining traditional crossword elements with gaming-related vocabulary. Here's the technical process behind it: 1. Data Source: Used a 3.8 Million Rows Reddit dataset from Hugging Face (https://huggingface.co/datasets/webis/tldr-17). 2. Data Filtering: Narrowed down to gaming-related subreddits (r/gaming,…

Over the past few weeks I've been working on a small application to view trending repos on GitHub. I built the PWA[1] with React, Next.js and GraphQL .. but what's interesting is the application is only using React server side, meaning the client side javascript is only a few lines code adding some event listeners and registering a service worker for offline capability. This helped me achieve a perfect google chrome performance audit I learned a ton working on it and would love to talk about it if anyone has any questions! Hi all, I've always been fascinated by logic puzzles and, over the past 15 years, I've published around 300 zebra puzzles, mostly in Portuguese. Now, using LLMs, I've managed to automate the creation of these puzzles, leading to the birth of ZebraPuzzles.com. There are around 80 different themes that the generator uses to transform a raw puzzle into a thematic one. For instance, the LLM translates this clue: >The girl Shirt=Pink is next to the girl Age=11 to >The girl who wears a Pink shirt is next to the 11-year-old girl. The website offers five new logic puzzles daily, designed to…

Hi everybody. I occasionally make little browser-based games, and this is my latest attempt. It's not quite done, but it's quite playable (note: it does include audio): https://www.omiword.com/ This has been my occasional tinker target for ~5 years now, starting in the early days of Covid. The objective is to drag letter tiles within certain boundaries to spell four common American-English words. It hasn't got ads or anything, it's just supposed to be fun for its own sake. If people happen to like it, I might add an option for folks to make a small, one-time payment to unlock…
