Hi HN! I’ve always found it hard to explore the Mahābhārata and Rāmāyaṇa online. Most content is either long-form or scattered, and understanding a character like Karna or Bhishma usually means opening multiple tabs. I built https://www.ithihasas.in/ to solve that. It is a simple character explorer that lets you navigate the epics through people and their relationships instead of reading everything linearly. This was also an experiment with Claude CLI. I was able to put together the first version in a couple of hours. It helped a lot with generating structured content and…

Driving home from work one day, I wanted to know how many people we knew the names of who lived during the Roman era. Searching around, I found lists of Consuls and officials, but nothing that covered ordinary people or even most people like freedmen and slaves. So I ended up building a pipeline to process the more than 500k Latin inscriptions in the Epigraphic Database Clauss-Slaby https://edcs.hist.uzh.ch/en/ and extract the names of people (and attempt to cluster them, but this is a work in progress). There are databases where Classicists have done this manually for…

Hey everyone, creator of clann.app here. I will try to keep this short but at the end of the day you will be forgotten one day. I know this feels sad and it really is. I mean ask yourself who your great-grandfather is, you don't know! Heck, we don't even know how they lived their life. Now their generation had very little access to computers let alone the internet. The problem isn't about the future knowing who you are but them understanding how your generation lived their life. Further we often tend to forget about our extended family. I am from India and after every single exam someone…

I saw The Mahjong Guide (https://themahjong.guide/) today and loved how much a good visual explanation can do for an old game. Around the same time, this HN thread about using coding assistants to revive projects you never were going to finish (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=47902525) pushed me to actually do something with the idea. That combination sent me down a nostalgia rabbit hole. Thaayam / Dayaakattai is one of those games I played during childhood summers in Tamil Nadu with cousins, and this being summer again just brought those memories…

I built this as a side project because I found existing family tree tools either too bloated or too manual—I spent more time dragging boxes and aligning lines than actually mapping my family history. My goal was to make it instant: you just add the names, and the auto-layout engine handles the hierarchy and spacing automatically. It runs entirely in the browser and exports high-res PNG/JPGs. Would love feedback on the layout logic (especially for complex families) and the overall UI flow. Happy to answer any questions!

A 15-year-old dream has come true today. I started a PhD with the dream of creating a system that chants any Sanskrit shloka perfectly. And here I am opening sourcing Vaghenu, a meter aware sloka-to-chant, TTS for Sanskrit . This is the world's first vrutta-aware, open-source TTS for Sanskrit Chanting. I am making the model weights, training scripts, and even data (that I meticulously collected) public - https://prathosh.in/vagdhenu/ No large AI lab. No big engineering team. No venture-scale budget. Just a professor's conviction that one of humanity's oldest knowledge…
