24 alternatives to Whetuu – An opinionated, zero-config status line and history picker

An opinionated, zero-config status line and history picker for fish, bash and zsh, written in Zig - yamafaktory/whetuu

Whetuu is a status line and command history picker for fish, bash, and zsh shells. Written in Zig, it requires no configuration to use and works across multiple popular Unix shells. It displays shell status information… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

A single compiled binary that renders one curated status line for fish, bash and zsh, and binds the up arrow to its own history picker. The slowest module runs as a task via std.Io while the rest run alongside it, so a render costs about what its slowest probe costs.

hiSHtory is a better shell history. It stores your shell history in context (what directory you ran the command it, whether it succeeded or failed, how long it took, etc). This is all stored locally and end-to-end encrypted for syncing to to all your other computers. All of this is easily queryable via Control-R and via the hishtory CLI. This means from your laptop, you can easily find that complex bash pipeline you wrote on your server, and see the context in which you ran it.

This project is a tool for engineers who live in the terminal and are tired of losing their command history to ephemeral servers or fragmented `.bash_history` files. If you’re jumping between dozens of boxes, many of which might be destroyed an hour later, your "local memory" (the history file) is essentially useless. This tool builds a centralized, permanent brain for your shell activity, ensuring that a complex one-liner you crafted months ago remains accessible even if the server it ran on is long gone. The core mechanism wants to be a "zero-touch" capture that happens at the connection…

In the deep mists of time (circa 2012), I was playing with the Go standard library, and saw how easy it was to stand up a webserver that let you navigate a remote file system, and I thought it was pretty neat. I took a look at my shell history and a frequent pattern of commands was "cd, ls, cd, ls, ...". And I thought "I love my keyboard, but you know, point and click might be nice in this context." And then I thought, "It'd be even cooler if you could run commands there." Skip forward several years, a few earlier implementations, a name change, and now there's Hucksh(ell), a bash-like shell…

eBPF is an amazing technology that allows safely running user-supplied functions at pretty much arbitrary probe points in a kernel/user space context. Much has been written about how amazing this feature is for kernel observability. But as someone who writes user space code, what I find even more amazing is the support for tracing arbitrary user space programs, with no code changes and low overhead. However, doing in-depth analysis can get complicated and time-consuming. My goal with wachy was to make this debugging significantly easier/faster to use, by displaying traces in a TUI…

I initially built cs (codespelunker) as a way to answer the question, can BM25 relevance search work without building an index? Turns out it can, and so I iterated on the idea, building it into a full CLI tool. Recently I wanted to improve it by adding relevance of tools like Sourcegraph or Zoekt but again without adding an index. cs uses scc https://github.com/boyter/scc to understand the structure of the file on the fly. As such it can filter searches to code, comments or strings. It also applies a weighted BM25 algorithm where matches in actual code rank higher than…

I created this a year or so ago but recently made updates and I thought people might like to know that it exists. I made this to easily send links or text to someone else verbally, like over the phone or over voice chat (which is what I made it for). The goal is to be able to tell the link to someone else without being ambiguous or needing to spell it out, so I grabbed the words off a Grade 5 level dictionary. I understand that the domain itself doesn’t qualify but I’m trying to get a better domain.

I have used this tool privately since 2011 to manage directory jumping. While it is conceptually similar to tools like z or zoxide, the underlying ranking model is different. It uses a power-law convolution with the time series of cd actions to calculate a history-aware "frecency" metric instead of the standard heuristic counters and multipliers. This approach moves away from point-estimates for recency. Most tools look only at the timestamp of the last visit, which can allow a "one-off" burst of activity to clobber long-term habits. By convolving a configurable history window (typically the…
