24 alternatives to XML-Lib – An over-engineered XML workflow with guardrails and proofs

I built XML-Lib, a deliberately over-engineered XML playground that tries to bundle the whole document flow into one repo.

XML-Lib is an XML workflow tool that consolidates document processing into a single repository with built-in guardrails and verification mechanisms. Designed for developers and technical teams working with XML… Below are 24 products that do a similar job, ranked by how close each is in meaning and then by launch-day votes.

Recently several AI labs have published experiments where they tried to get AI coding agents to complete large software projects. - Cursor attempted to make a browser from scratch: https://cursor.com/blog/scaling-agents - Anthropic attempted to make a C Compiler: https://www.anthropic.com/engineering/building-c-compiler I have been wondering if there are software packages that can be easily reproduced by taking the available test suites and tasking agents to work on projects until the existing test suites pass. After playing with this concept by having…

The book page links to a blog post that explains how I got about it (and has a link to sample content), but the TL&DR is that I could not find a lot of books that were on "our" history _and_ were larded with technical details. So I set about writing one, and some five years later I'm happy to share the result. I think it's one of the few "computer history" books that has tons of code, but correct me if I'm wrong (I wrote this both to tell a story and to learn :-)). My favorite languages are Smalltalk and Lisp, but as an Emacs user, I've been using the latter for much longer and for my…

A few weeks ago a friend sent me grug-brain XSLT (1) which inspired me to redo my personal blog in XSLT. Rather than just build my own blog on it, I wrote it up for others to use and I've published it on GitHub https://github.com/vgr-land/vgr-xslt-blog-framework (2) Since others have XSLT on the mind, now seems just as good of a time as any to share it with the world. Evidlo@ did a fine job explaining the "how" xslt works (3) The short version on how to publish using this framework is: 1. Create a new post in HTML wrapped in the XML headers and footers the framework…

Hi HN, Since 2019, I’ve been working on a writing platform designed for creating complex documents (e.g., theses). I personally use it for everything as it also allows to classify documents in categories so you can organize them efficiently. As of a few months ago, the app is also available in the browser, and you can now invite coworkers to collaborate on a document in real time. The app is somewhat inspired by LyX. It offers an intuitive, modern editor, but users don’t need to know any LaTeX. When it’s time to export, they can choose from a range of templates (IEEE paper, thesis, etc.). A…

I've just released gosax, a new Go library for high-performance SAX (Simple API for XML) parsing. It's designed for efficient, memory-conscious XML processing, drawing inspiration from quick-xml and pkg/json. https://github.com/orisano/gosax Key features: - Read-only SAX parsing - Highly efficient parsing using techniques inspired by quick-xml and pkg/json - SWAR (SIMD Within A Register) optimizations for fast text processing gosax is particularly useful for processing large XML files or streams without loading the entire document into memory. It's well-suited…

Hi Hacker News! We’re Vadim and Chris from Highlight.io [1]. We do web app monitoring and are working on using LLMs/embeddings to add new functionality to our error monitoring product. Given that there’s a lot of founders/engineers using LLMs in their products, we figured we’d share how we built the new functionality, their impact on our workflows, and how you can try it out. Our goal was to build two features: (1) tagging errors (e.g. deeming an error as “authentication error” or a “database error”); and (2) grouping similar errors together (e.g. two errors that have a different…

Initially I started building this for my own projects. The main goal was to define a unified "blueprint" allowing me to develop multi-platform apps using the same code, without code generation. I wanted to be able to develop the same functionality on web, desktop, cli, server, mobile, whatever... I've been able to achieve this by relying on TypeScript, a 4-layer architecture (UseCase => App => Product => Target) and dependency injection. This mechanism allows me to use whatever tech stack I want, provided the good adapters are developed. For instance, I have pre-built ones : node express…

Hey HN, solo dev here. After years of frustration with how LLMs handle complex documents, especially PDFs with tables, I decided to build a solution myself. My approach uses a Markdown conversion step to preserve the table structure, which seems to work surprisingly well for chunking. This little parser is the first public piece of a much larger, privacy-focused AI platform I'm building. I'm pretty much running on fumes financially, so any feedback, critique, or support is massively appreciated. Happy to answer any questions about the approach!
