I wanted QR codes to be really simple to implement everywhere and for everyone. So I spent some time on my weekends trying to write a fast QR generator module for Apache, and here are the results: ab -n 5000 -c 100 http://lilqr.com/qr Requests per second: 4301.78 [#/sec] (mean)

A friend(@wolever) and I spent the weekend hacking up a small web app which makes it easy for you to sell digital goods for Bitcoins. Once a customer has clicked the “buy” button, we take care of giving them a unique address, monitoring that address for transactions, then securely notifying your website once a minimum number of confirmations have been received. Oh, ya, and then we send you the Bitcoins :) The website is here: BitWillet: http://www.bitwillet.com and there is a demo on the front page. (full disclosure: BitWillet uses the Willet, http://dev.getwillet.com, platform, of which I…

Hey all, some time ago I already presented my idea on HN with a landing page. Your feedback has been great and very valuable, we continued iterating on the product with customers and now have our first public version online. StorageRoom is a cloud-based CMS built specifically for Mobile Apps. If you have your own mobile app or if you are an agency or freelancer developing apps for others you can use it to create apps faster and to combine the advantages of native mobile applications with the ease of maintenance of websites. http://storageroomapp.com What do you think? Do you see other use…

If you're like me, your number 1 problem is: How do I get users? Approcity is a totally free link exchange network for web app developers. Feature a customizable (and non-blocking) bar on your website / blog / girlfriends site. When anyone clicks an app that is featured on your bar you will be rewarded with karma. Karma gets your app(s) featured on other people's bars. Its reciprocity for web apps! I've also included some safeguards to prevent the overly-clever from unfairly racking up their own scores.

This was my recent weekend project, aimed at teaching me JavaScript, a bit of HTML5, and (mostly) WebGL. The orbital data are from NASA JPL. I was inspired in part by this Flash app: http://www.dynamicdiagrams.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/orrery_2011_bce.swf, but wanted to do something in 3D. Coming from the games-dev world, this is my first introduction to web coding. The UI is jquery. I mostly used http://learningwebgl.com/blog for the 3D stuff. Being WebGL, it will work mostly on Chrome, Firefox 4 Beta. Forget about IE. I needed to figure out how to render text to the WebGL canvas - I…

link: http://slector.com We choose designers (in this case, graphic illustrators) based on two things: 1) their work/portfolio 2) their rates. I've created Slector (slector.com) to simplify the process (based on my experience on finding and choosing illustrators for Hacker Monthly). Slector display all the listed illustrators' portfolio item randomly, and you get to "thumbs up/down" them. After that, click on the big "Generate List" button below to see the list of your favorite illustrators for hire. It's that simple :) The webapp is still in MVP stage so would really really love your…

I'd appreciate any comments and critiques on a new site that I just launched - iosframeworks.com While developing an iPhone app, I kept stumbling across amazing frameworks/libraries/classes that my the job much easier, however, I couldn't find a concise listing of what was available. The site currently provides a searchable list of tagged frameworks. My next steps will be: * Allowing users to submit new links * Also cataloging the apps that use the frameworks listed. This will allow visitors to see how the code can be implemented. * Comments and ratings of the frameworks * A blog with…

https://github.com/bruth/backbone-kvo I've come to appreciate the various libraries in my current JavaScript stack including: jQuery, Backbone (and thus Underscore), and RequireJS. The one thing missing is key-value observing between my DOM elements and my data. I was hoping the jQuery datalink API would have matured, but the scope of the API is limited and the implementation is somewhat confusing to me. So I decided to start writing one that initially assumes Backbone (since it has events built in). Since Backbone's controllers aren't traditional controllers, I linked the DOM element via…

The use case am considering is to do self testing on your site yourself, rather than depending on any third party, I plan to OpenSource it. I am storing the mouse movement coordinates of the user in a javascript array which I plan to send to server every few seconds and save into DB. Where I plan to aggregate the data and show final results. What do you think? http://websymphony.github.com/labs/trackerapp/ Currently tested on only Chrome.

http://sein-cal.co.cc/ This is our first web application. It is a no-frills implementation of the Seinfeld Calendar, and aids in improving productivity by helping form habits. We (two of us) started with it 5 days ago. With a bit of Python background, we decided to go at it with Django. The process was in itself a learning experience with remote collaboration, learning and using git to manage the code, and using App Engine with Django. All for the first time. Feedback welcome.

Comments on Science is a free and public user-generated database of scientific comments. Commenting on papers in academic journals is a complicated process, with many steps between an idea for a comment and the appearance of that comment in a (mostly closed-access) publication. The goal of Comments on Science is to reduce this friction and enable accessible and free scientific communication. About the site: I decided to build something useful in the month of May and this is what I made. It has a few features like following (users, papers, or comments), tagging, voting, etc. It was a nice…

https://github.com/jxchen/DailyDealScrapers On the Groupon IPO thread someone mentioned people selling scraped groupon deal data. To satisfy my curiosity I made my own. Pretty interesting to play around with the data and see how much money their deals are making.

Hi Hacker News! My Co Co-op Matt and I are on a work term and were given the task of building a webapp that could make $20 in four weeks as our onboarding challenge. We're in the final stretch here and would sure appreciate HN's thoughts (we realize we kind of did this backwards, building something first before talking to people who might use it, but hey! We're leaning.). So basically, we tried to apply game dynamics to retaining visitors to websites by offering a reward (ie. discount coupon / premium content, etc.) for meeting various 'objectives' (ie. pages to visit). We call it ScavSite…

About three months ago, ipplex, a technology startup I work with released a real-time Money Reader app for Blind users that has been recognized by major publications and blogs, and has a 5 star rating in the app store. You can see a quick in office demo of it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvfDnGMPrkI I wasn't active on HN then, but I thought the community may enjoy seeing some very early real world applications of real time object recognition. We are working on bringing this to all kinds of objects as well as landmarks, and incorporating some really interesting things to make this…

I'd love any comments, suggestions or critiques on Newsfeedy (www.newsfeedy.com). It gathers trending topics from Twitter and Google and fetches news stories about them, and displays supplementary info from Twitter and Reddit. I originally created it for myself as a way to quickly catch up on breaking news, and a friend suggested it might be useful for others too. I know it's not groundbreaking, it's just a simple tool that saves 3 seconds of your life. And yes, I know that it's not very shiny. Thanks!

Do you have a web service that you run (CRM, Dashboards, Gamification etc.) and possibly have an API for? Showcase it in this thread by adding a link and a one sentence description.
