1M+ animated GPU sprites in JavaScript

In plain words
This open-source HTML5 game engine adds Sprite GPU Layers, a feature that packs sprite definitions onto the GPU and renders them with a custom vertex shader. By eliminating CPU computation and GPU uploads, it enables rendering over a million animated sprites on moderate desktop GPUs. The solution works best for static or non-interactive sprites that don't require physics or input updates. The engine is available on GitHub and npm under the MIT license with demo projects included.

In testing, we've easily managed to blast millions of sprites around on moderate desktop-grade GPUs. Indeed, we hit the fill rate limitation of the GPU far sooner than we hit any other type of limitation. But as with all hardware-related things, ymmv. Frankly, we'd love to get our hands on a 5090 to see what we could do. The link includes 4 demos to play with, and the full source is on GitHub and npm under the MIT license.

I realized that the PDF engines of modern desktop browsers (PDFium and PDF.js) support JavaScript with enough I/O primitives to make a basic game like Tetris. It was a bit tricky to find a union of features that work in both engines, but in the end it turns out that showing/hiding annotation "fields" works well to make monochrome pixels, and keyboard input can be achieved by typing in a text input box. All in all it's quite janky but a nice reminder of how general purpose PDF scripting can be. The linked PDF is all ASCII so you can just open it in a text editor, or have a look at…
