What it does
I've been seeing a lot of these "situation intelligence" products pop up lately, but TBH, they all look a bit vibe coded... So I wanted to show what a little care and craft could do. 14k + active satellites beautifully (and performant) rendered using Mapbox, a custom WebGL engine and shaders. Nothing much more to do than explore and wonder a bit.
Track over 10,000 satellites in real time on a 3D globe. Altis visualises live orbital data from CelesTrak using custom WebGL shaders on Mapbox GL.
Altis uses publicly available orbital data from CelesTrak to show real-time tracking of satellites in orbit around Earth. Over 10,000 objects are propagated live using Keplerian orbital elements and rendered on a 3D globe. The globe is rendered using Mapbox GL JS with custom WebGL shaders layered on top. Satellite positions are computed from Keplerian elements entirely on the GPU — vertex shaders propagate each orbit in real time, while fragment shaders handle the point rendering and trail fade. A two-pass bloom gives each satellite head a soft glow.
