Classify mechanical faults using Contrastive Language-Audio Pretraining

Diagnose a car fault from its sound — an honest, end-to-end audio-ML pipeline (scrape → clean → CLAP → calibrated triage). Proof of concept. - adam-s/car-diagnosis

In plain words

This tool uses contrastive language-audio pretraining to identify and classify mechanical faults. It analyzes audio recordings to detect equipment problems, making it useful for maintenance professionals and engineers who need to diagnose machinery issues. The approach combines language and audio data processing to recognize fault patterns, available as an open-source project on GitHub.

cardiag is an end-to-end audio-ML pipeline. It scrapes fault-sound clips from YouTube/TikTok, cleans the audio (isolating the mechanical sound from speech, music, and noise), embeds it with a frozen CLAP model, and trains small linear heads to triage the fault. It is exposed as a CLI and a live web app. This is a proof of concept, and honest about what that means. Diagnosing a car fault from a phone recording is genuinely hard, so cardiag is built as a calibrated triage aid rather than a diagnoser: it tells you whether something sounds wrong, roughly where in the car it is, and a ranked shortlist of likely parts. When the audio won't support a call, it says "uncertain" instead of bluffing.…from github.com

Here is a tool I built initially for myself to help with my German and Greek language studies. It started as a hack for creating Anki cards from native language audio. It extracts the words, finds their base forms (lemmas) and groups the examples by the lemma. At some point I realised that I have a transcription with word level timestamps that opens a lot of other opportunities. So I added a mode to click the first and last word in the transcript and it starts looping with the right gap and repeat count. Another feature I use a lot is selecting an audio fragment, sending a predefined prompt…

Our goal with this project is to build a completely open source, state of the art turn detection model that can be used in any voice AI application. I've been experimenting with LLM voice conversations since GPT-4 was first released. (There's a previous front page Show HN about Pipecat, the open source voice AI orchestration framework I work on. [1]) It's been almost two years, and for most of that time, I've been expecting that someone would "solve" turn detection. We all built initial, pretty good 80/20 versions of turn detection on top of VAD (voice activity detection) models. And…

I might be the only SRE on Earth with his own bowling center. It's a more in-depth gig than you'd think. My family and I bought an abandoned 8-lane bowling center in the rural mid-west. In our small town there weren't many recreation options for families. You've heard of a food desert? This is an R&R desert. It had been abandoned for a good reason. The roof leaks, the electrical system was constantly surging, and my 70-year-old bowling equipment (still) doesn't work perfectly. The system that keeps your score is particularly interesting to me. It's the thing you watch during your game, but…

Over the past few months, our team has been building more and more slidedecks using web frontend technologies with coding harnesses like Claude Code, but a common complaint is to make even small edits we need to edit the code either manually or via the harness. To avoid this loop, I ended up creating Bento, a single HTML file with everything you need in a slide tool including animations and shared editing. There's no install or cloud login, everything works offline. The default deck is around 560 KB and it doesn't need to fetch anything once you got it. Open it in a browser and then you can…

  • A few days ago I found myself trying out GLM 5.2 and was really positively impressed. The capabilities and security I was getting from this LLM are similar to those I've gotten from models like Claude or GPT, and this really surprised me. But then I thought, "I wonder how it would work on a normal computer like mine," and above all, "I wonder if it would work without going into OOM on a computer like mine." So I started working with the help of agents to test this possibility. I started converting the model to int4, understanding MTP usage, and if possible implementing DSA for long context.…

Hello! For the last 2 months, I've been building OpenSEO. It's a user friendly UI wrapping the DataForSEO API which has high quality SEO data for keywords, backlinks, AI SEO and competitor research. Instead of paying $100+ per month, you buy DataForSEO credits and pay only for usage. The coolest thing about the project so far has been hearing about what people are building on top of it. People are using coding agents to quickly integrate with Google Search Console, Google Ads and building their own AI SEO and reporting features. Many were already building their own custom solutions around…
